Local group embarks on mission to restore legendary B-17 bomber
Inside a pole barn, a dedicated group of aviation enthusiasts has undertaken a monumental endeavor to resurrect a piece of history. The rare B-17E, fondly known as Desert Rat after the name found painted on the side of the plane’s fuselage, was initially built as a bomber aircraft delivered to the Army Air Forces on April 14, 1942, before being converted into a cargo plane.

Illinois’ only Native American reservation is celebrated at Northwestern University’s Center for Native American and Indigenous Research Symposium. Keynote speakers Zach Pahmahmie (left) and Raphael Wahwassuck explained how their Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation’s 130-acre parcel in DeKalb County was officially recognized as a reservation by the federal government last month. The Potawatomi land was originally 1,280 acres, but it was confiscated in 1850. “We are in the process of getting the remainder recognized as a reservation and returned back to us,” said Pahmahmie.
