Memphis schools lost more than 2,000 students this year, early data shows
Sign up for Chalkbeat Tennessee’s free newsletter to keep up with statewide education policy and Memphis-Shelby County Schools. Memphis-Shelby County Schools continues to lose students year over year, with over 2,000 fewer enrolled in the district compared to last August. At an Aug. 25 board meeting, Executive Director of Accountability Bill White said just over 101,000 students were registered in MSCS by the end of the first month of classes. That’s a 2.2% decrease from last year’s count, at 103,280 students . The decrease is part of a decade-long enrollment drop in the district , by around 9% from 2014 to spring 2025. But it’s not as severe as district leaders estimated before the school year began, White said. Stacey Davis, the district’s director of enrollment and attendance, said school staff will increase parent outreach in the coming weeks to combat barriers to enrollment. “Many of our parents are, especially at the beginning of the year, they’re having issues with uniforms and the essentials that are needed for the child to start school on time,” she said in an interview with Chalkbeat Tuesday. White shared data Tuesday that showed the number of enrolled students grew by 900 between Aug. 25

Memphis schools stopped giving laptops to every student this year
Sign up for Chalkbeat Tennessee’s free newsletter to keep up with statewide education policy and Memphis-Shelby County Schools. Memphis-Shelby County Schools has quietly ended a yearslong policy of giving every student their own personal laptop or tablet . Parents and educators at Memphis’ White Station High School were taken by surprise last month when school began without students receiving the devices they had in years past. The apparent change has caused confusion and last-minute scrambling to adjust classroom instruction. In an Aug. 18 email obtained by Chalkbeat, White Station Principal Carrye Holland told parents that the school was shifting classroom instruction to be less “heavily based on technology” because it could no longer assign each student their own device. “At this time, we are not able to provide devices for all students and do not anticipate being able to do so moving forward,” she wrote. It’s unclear how many schools are being affected by the change. Although Superintendent Roderick Richmond called the district’s laptop policy unsustainable in last month’s board meeting, MSCS has not answered specific questions about how the policy change is being applied. Richmond said in the Aug. 25 meeting that MSCS purchased enough devices to maintain the
