Wildcats rally to beat rival East Surry

PILOT MOUNTAIN — West Stokes’ tennis team rallied and beat rival East Surry 5-4 to close out its regular season at 11-3 overall and 6-0 in the Mid-State 2A Conference.

The Cardinals No. 1 and No. 2 seeds defeated the Wildcats higher seeds in close matches. Levi Walton beat Jayden Baughman 6-7(8-10), 6-3, 10-7 in the battle of the one seeds, and Kade Talton defeated Todd Mendenhall 1-6, 7-5, 12-10 in the twos.

Junior Peyton Spainhour won the No. 3 battle over Lupe Chaves 7-6(8-6) 4-6, 10-7 to bring the match total to 2-1 East Surry.

The No 6 seeded teams were done early when Logan Fagg of East Surry disposed of Sklyar Godwin 6-3, 6-1 making the score 3-1.

Myles Knox and Will Spainhour won their respected matches to tie it up at 3-3 after individual play. Knox won over Noah Hopkins 5-7, 6-2, 10-6, and Will defeated Hayden Douglas 6-3, 6-0.

In the doubles No. 1, Watson and Talton beat Baughman and Mendenhall 8-2, Peyton Spainhour and Knox rebounded and won over Chavez and Hopkins 8-4. Will Spainhour and Godwin sealed the deal with an 8-5 victory over Douglas and Fagg.

West Stokes will compete in the Mid-State 2A Conference Tournament on April 24 at Morehead High School.
