    Royals softball team beats Pillager in last home game

    The Royalton Royals softball team had a successful last home game of the season, Tuesday, May 14, beating Pillager 6-4.

    Pillager scored two runs at the top of the first inning. The Royals answered with a two-base hit from Libby Yourczek, sending Maddison Albright to home plate. In the next play, Brooke Wenner had a base hit, allowing Yourczek to run home and tie the game. Emily Block had grounded out in the third inning, giving the Royals a 3-2 lead.

    Head Coach Kelly Gotfredson said the teamwork between everyone on the bench stuck out. She explained how the team started the game playing its seniors since it was senior night. Eventually substitutions were made with players from the regular roster to build off of what was started.

    “They didn’t get down,” said Gotfredson. “I was proud of them because in the past we kind of got down and been like “well whatever,’ and I’m like ‘no we can’t. We are still in this. We got to figure this out and start hitting again.’”

    Pillager had a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning, but the Royals came back after a triple hit from Block, scoring two runs and a lined out hit from Yourczek, scoring one more run. The Royals ended the game with four hits while Pillager had six. Both teams had two error.

    The Royals traveled to take on Long Prairie-Grey Eagle Monday, May 13, losing 12-2. Runs were scored by Block and Abigail Nelson. Jaiden Bailey threw two strikeouts on the mound, along with three errors and two walks.

    The Royals also traveled to Make Lake Friday, May 10, winning 2-0. Jetta Blais and Alise Shoenrock scored a run, along with Schoenrock having three hits and one run batted in. Schoenrock also pitched seven innings, throwing five strikeouts.

    The Royals traveled to take on Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa in a double header Thursday, May 9. BBE won the first game 12-2. Yourczek had two runs batted in, along with hits from Alright, Wenner and Sascha Duevel-. Bailey allowed seven hits on the mound and no strikeouts.

    The second game of the double header was closer, with the Royals losing 7-6. The Royals lead 5-4 at the bottom of the third inning. Later in the seventh inning, BBE came back after scoring three more runs. Albright had three hits in the game and stole two bases.

    The Royals traveled to Holdingford Thursday, May 16, and played their last game of the regular season in Pierz Friday, May 17. The 6AA Section Tournament will start Monday, May 20.
