Humboldt County Woman Badly Injured in Piercy Crash Saturday

GraceA Humboldt County couple were injured in a northern Mendocino County crash on Hwy 101 while returning from a surgery on the woman’s arm in the Bay Area Saturday.

Grace and Bobby Hill drove north on 101 after Grace’s surgery on a broken arm when Bobby drifted off the road near Piercy. Their truck flipped leaving Grace with major injuries. She needed to be medivacked to Santa Rosa. Bobby was also injured though not as seriously.

According to their GoFundMe, “The truck only had liability insurance, so they get nothing. This is going to be a long, long road of recovery for Grace and she will undergo several surgeries, including her eye, nose, back and arm. We are asking for any donations that can be made to help them recover financially and prayers for Grace’s health and recovery. Please share and donate if you can.

As Grace’s daughter, Cindy Markee, said, “Hug your loved ones and please drive safe.”

That people have to travel so far to get pretty basic health care should scare locals. Not long ago there was a story about getting trapped on 101 during a snow storm and sure enough one person trapped was coming home from treatment for a heart issue. It’s a constant here.

However if I were this woman, I would also be horrified at having such a photo of myself appearing on a news site. Her situation is dire enough without it.

I hope the photo will help with the GoFundMe but I would hate to have my picture displayed if I was in that state.

It isn’t realistic to expect top notch medical care in a remote, rural area (not economically feasible).

I moved to Santa Barbara county recently to get closer to better medical care (and for several other reasons).

The lack of top quality local medical care is one of the big drawbacks of living here. The Bay Area is pretty far, but many people in other places also live a long drive from specialized services.

The photo made me wonder if these folks are old enough to qualify for Medicare. But in any case MEDICARE4ALL would make situations like this much easier to deal with. Please ask your federal representatives to support the current senate bill.

It does seem odd an American Citizen of her age would not be eligible for Medicare but there may be other expenses for all I know.

Yes. I speak against taxes all the time but we should be taking care of our elders

They probably do have Medicare or MediAid. After all she was coming home from surgery so lack of insurance is probably not the issue. Lack of doctors in the area is. Which insurance doesn’t fix. What they don’t have now is a vehicle. And there are always incidental expenses with being out of the area.
What would be great is some kind of professional yet affordable medical travel service so that a long drive is not needed. Or that there would be someway of having appropriate specialists periodically visiting up from the Bay Area.

Sadly, It’s the price we all pay for living in a rural area…

Did this poor woman give permission to have her photo posted? Very poor taste. Sad.

I hope the photo helps raise funds. Unfortunately, it looks like my age group will be skint this month and I will not be able to help.

What’s messed up is…

If she needs SNAP benefits now, she’s going to have to work for it…

Good job Joe…

Isn’t there something about able bodied in that bit of legislation? If so, she certainly wouldn’t.

Not sure about the able bodied part…

Getting an exception would probably cause delays…

It’s part of the debt ceiling deal…

Able bodied and under the age 54.

Yep. Used to be able bodied and under the age of 49.

Somehow raising the age to 54, so Biden can keep pissing away $trillions, is going to miraculously keep America solvent.

Makes perfect sense.

If SNAP is a problem it is the State not the Feds. I’m sick of Joe for other reasons he is entirely to blame for! I knew I’d hate him and I pinched my nose and voted for him anyway. When he won I said “He will piss me off.”. What is an American to do anyway? Both parties are completely insane and I’m not even sure they have platforms anymore. What do these bastards stand for? Guns, god, fetuses and on the other side only trans rights matter?

This is absolutely being negotiated at the Federal level…

Biden will either sign on or not…

Cont.

“One of the most contentious issues surrounding talks over raising the debt limit has been whether the Biden administration would agree to stricter work requirements for people seeking food stamps and other safety net assistance.”

Facing the senior years can be pretty scary. Especially in this part of the state.

Note: Before taking photo of unconscious mother, gently close her jaw and smooth down her hair. She may be unconscious, but she still has her dignity as a woman. Also, one can use good writing to plea for funds rather than a photo: “woman traveling after surgery is severely injured in rollover”.

Point taken. I am older too and I felt so bad for her. I do see your point and will post more mindfully in the future.
