What's actually worth doing outdoors in the Southeast in November?

As Noah Kahan sings, "it's the season of the sticks," and November brings a version of that to much of the Southeast. On many mountain trails, the leaves are down, the air has a crisp bite and the summer crowds have thinned. Farther south, it's the start of a more comfortable season outdoors. I hiked Mount Mitchell, the tallest mountain east of the Mississippi, on a weekday in November and didn't see another soul on the trail. The catch? Inches of fallen leaves buried the path, hiding the rocks and roots and making every step a little treacherous. That's the trade-off on many mountain trails: quieter paths and open views in exchange for variable conditions. So what's actually worth doing in November? Hike a canyon while the trees are bare Cloudland Canyon State Park in Georgia and Little River Canyon National Preserve in Alabama can be even better in November than in summer. As leaves fall, views of canyon walls and waterfalls open through the trees, and the cool air makes steep climbs more bearable. Waterfall flow varies, and Little River can run low in dry stretches, so don't count on a roaring cascade. Watch your footing: Fallen leaves hide
