PICKAWAY COUNTY, Ohio — A tragic traffic accident occurred on US Route 23 in the southern lanes near the Island Road overpass on Monday, March 20, just after 8:30 p.m.
The Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office received a call regarding the crash. According to reports, deputies arrived on the scene and found that a 2001 Lincoln driven by 69-year-old Paul N. Wegmeyer of Columbus, Ohio, had been hit from the rear by a 2012 Jeep driven by Morgan A. Fannin out of Lockbourne. The collision caused the Jeep to veer out of its lane, hitting a 2013 Hyundai driven by Roger Justice of Circleville.
Paul Wegmeyer was immediately transported to Grant Medical Center by Harrison Township EMS, while Morgan Fannin was taken to Ohio Health Berger Hospital. Unfortunately, Paul Wegmeyer succumbed to his injuries on March 21, 2023, as a result of the crash.
Officials suggest that the Lincoln was stationary on Route 23, with its lights switched off when the Jeep struck it from behind. The incident remains under investigation by the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office.
In a statement, Sheriff Hafey expressed his gratitude to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Circleville EMS, Pickaway Township EMS, Harrison Township EMS, and the Ohio Department of Transportation for their assistance during the crash investigation. The investigation is still ongoing, and more details will be released as they become available.
