Child hit by police officer in Phoenix hospitalized in critical condition

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -- A child is in the hospital after being hit by a police cruiser in Phoenix on Wednesday evening. Sgt. Brian Bower with Phoenix Police said just before 6 p.m., a patrol officer and assistant had just finished a call when they were turning near 11th Avenue and Yuma Road. As they were driving, they saw a young girl waving at them from the front yard of a home, trying to get their attention. However, as officers were waving at the girl, they saw another child in the road at the last minute, Bower said. The officer tried to stop but unfortunately struck the child.

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) — Police have made an arrest in a shooting that left a man dead back in May, south of downtown Phoenix. Police arrested 36-year-old Billy Jameson on Thursday for the shooting death of 49-year-old Jose Estrada. The shooting happened Sunday, May 21. Police were called around 6 p.m. to the area near 3rd Street and Interstate 17 and, initially, officers didn’t find anyone injured or heard gunshots, but someone in the area showed the officers to an encampment under the I-17 on 3rd Street. There they found a man who was shot. The man didn’t survive his injuries and died at the scene.

MESA, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) - A man is in custody after allegedly stealing over $100,000 of perfumes from multiple fragrance stores in Gilbert, Chandler, Queen Creek, and Phoenix. The thefts started in June 2022 when 37-year-old Jose Luis Acosta walked into an Ulta Beauty store near Baseline and Copper roads, filled a pillowcase with $2959 worth of fragrances, and left the store without paying, court documents say. According to police, from Aug. 2022 - May 30, 2023, Acosta went to 10 more Ulta Beauty stores throughout the east Valley, where he shoved perfumes into duffle bags and pillowcases before fleeing the store. His thefts during these months totaled $39,740.98. Police say Acosta was in and out of the store within a minute during these crimes.
