PHILLIPSBURG, NJ- “Home Run Values in life “ inspired George and Beth Perrini to “step up to the plate” and organize a fun event to raise money for Phillipsburg area youth baseball returns to Walters Park this year.
On Saturday, May 25, 2024, the third annual John Russo Homerun Derby will benefit the Steele Hill Youth Organization. Steele Hill currently operates the only baseball program in Phillipsburg for youth. Perrini wanted to offer Phillipsburg youth some of the same equipment options and top-of-the-line equipment, as well as lessons that they see other area teams have.
The Home Run Derby will be held at Walter’s Park, and will include minors, majors, and juniors. The ages range from nine to 14 years of age.
Save the Date! There is no fee for spectators, so come out to join in the fun and cheer on the youth as they participate in the Home Run Derby.The snack bar will be open and pre-order of t-shirts for the event is available.
All players in those categories are eligible to participate regardless of home town. To register scan the barcode on the flyer, call or text at 908-310-3779. Separate registration and fee is required for the “Dingers at Dusk”.
A Facebook group page has been started to follow more on this event titled the Steele Hill Dingers. The event is named the John Russo Homerun Derby after John Russo, a native of Phillipsburg who lived on Columbus Avenue. Perrini says, “John always stressed the importance of doing your best, practicing and committing to a sport, and the idea that for the most dedicated, sports can open the door to college when otherwise it might be impossible”.
Event organizers say, “Kids do not need to be on a team to participate, but over 35 teams have been invited once again to send participants, and anyone can sign up”.
There will be a father/son combo competition and other activities. A winner at each level will be held, with the final round under the lights of Walter’s Park. Organizers add to the fun, each participant choosing a “walk-up song” for their introduction.
Family and friends will be able to purchase T-shirts at the event, as well as fan signs at the entrance.
