The Philadelphia dining scene impressed the judges for the 2023 James Beard Awards, with two chefs and one restaurant securing wins on Monday night in one of the highest forms of recognition in the industry, writes Emma Dooling for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Chef Chutatip “Nok” Suntaranon was recognized with the Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic award for her work at Kalaya Thai Kitchen, while restaurateur Ellen Yi received Outstanding Restaurateur for High Street Hospitality Group award.

Among local eateries, Rittenhouse Square mainstay Friday Saturday Sunday ended the night as the winner in the Outstanding Restaurant category.

This year’s winners were announced Monday at a ceremony at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.

“To Philadelphia, you made me belong,” said Yin as she accepted her award. “Your ongoing commitment fostered a world class restaurant scene that represents our diversity, ethnicity, history, and resiliency. I could not be more proud to accompany such a talented group of Philadelphians to represent our city.”

Finalists for this year’s awards were revealed in late March, and included a total of six Philadelphia-area chefs and restaurants.
