An upgraded state-of-the-art nature-themed playground has opened in Cobbs Creek near 63^rd and Spruce, on the edge of the Upper Darby border, reports West Philly Local.

The $1.6 million Cobbs Creek Nature Playground was funded in part with American Rescue Plan funds through the Department of Community and Economic Development.

The playground area includes:

• Water fountain

• Newly planted trees

• On-site seating (made from refurbished tree stumps and logs)

• Lawn area

• New walking paths

• Trash receptacles

• Pedestrian lighting and security cameras

State House Speaker Joanna McClinton, who represents parts of Delaware County and Philadelphia, was a key advocate for the playground. 

“I am proud to call Cobbs Creek home for many reasons, but especially because it is a great community for neighbors of all ages,” McClinton said. “When community members and elected leaders collaborate, we can make beautiful things happen, and the restoration of the Cobbs Creek Playground is a perfect example of what we can achieve.”

The improvements are part of Philadelphia’s Rebuild program, with $600 million allocated for investment in public spaces, including $25 million for Cobbs Creek.

 Improvements include the Nature Playground, Environmental Center, Johnny Sample (Cobbs Creek) Recreation Center, and the Blanche A. Nixon (Cobbs Creek) Library.
