PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Two shootings in Kensington happened just minutes apart and half a block away from each other Thursday night. One of the two victims, a 15-year-old girl, is in critical condition.

The first shooting took place on G Street, near Allegheny Avenue, around 10:30 p.m. Police said about 14 shots were fired, and the 15-year-old girl may have been caught in the crossfire.

“Preliminary information — we’re not sure if she’s the intended target,” said Chief Inspector Scott Small. “She may have been struck by stray gunfire.”

She was shot in both thighs and was rushed to the hospital, but she is expected to physically recover.

An empty parked car was also hit.

About 15 minutes later, police at the first scene heard gunshots around the corner of Allegheny Avenue. When they arrived, they saw a 29-year-old man firing gunshots and ordered him to drop his weapon, which he did.

Police said he was returning gunfire after being shot in the legs in a drive-by. He was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition.

No arrests have been made in either shooting. Police are still investigating, but at this point, they don’t think the shootings are connected. It was just a coincidence that they happened so close to each other in time and distance.

According to city data, 11% of shooting victims in Philadelphia this year are under the age of 18.
