Police searching for driver involved in fatal hit-and-run in Southwest Philly

A dark-colored sedan fled the scene after running over a 27-year-old man on Island Avenue, authorities said

A 27-year-old man was killed after being hit by multiple cars in Southwest Philadelphia early Tuesday morning, police said.

The man was crossing Island Avenue at the intersection of Woodland Avenue at 2 a.m. when he was struck by a Nissan driving southbound on Island Avenue, according to multiple media reports.

The impact of the crash sent the man into the northbound lane, where he was run over by another car. The driver kept driving, FOX29 reported. 

The driver of the Nissan, a 65-year-old man, stayed at the scene to wait for the police. The man who was struck was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:13 a.m

Police said the motorist who fled the scene was driving a dark-colored sedan, 6ABC reported.

There were more than 30 fatal hit-and-run crashes last year in Philadelphia – four times the total of 2019.
