Unlike many made-up food holidays, National Donut Day actually has a rich history. It was first celebrated in Chicago in 1938 to honor the Salvation Army's so-called Donut Lassies, a group of women who traveled to base camps in eastern France during World War I. There, the volunteers provided religious services and hot cocoa, played records on a Vitrola and fried doughnuts in soldiers' helmets. The treats were a hit, so much so that returning soldiers — nicknamed "doughboys" for not-obvious reasons — continued to crave doughnuts when they returned home, fueling their popularity stateside.

This Pride Month, people can support LGBTQ organizations by tasting the rainbow at numerous bars in Philadelphia and its suburbs. Cocktails for a Cause, an annual fundraiser hosted by FCM Hospitality, returns this June with a lineup of speciality cocktails that each represent a color on the LGBTQ+ flag. For each drink sold, $1 will be donated to the William Way LGBT Center and The Attic Youth Center, two nonprofits that support the city's queer communities.

Two new Philadelphia bars are receiving national recognition as part of Esquire's annual list of the best bars in the U.S., published Thursday. Andra Hem, a Scandinavian-inspired cocktail lounge, and French wine bar Superfolie were named among the 33 best bars.
