PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — For the third year, Philabundance will launch its Driving Hunger Away During Ramadan initiative in Philadelphia. The meal distribution effort will feed more than 200 people a day during the 30 days of Ramadan.

Ramadan is the Islamic month of prayer, fasting and reflection. “In Ramadan, Muslims fast from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. but then they break the fast with a meal at the end of the day,” explained Loree Jones, CEO of Philabundance.

This year, Ramadan begins on March 22 and ends on April 20. Those in need of meals can choose from vegetable curry with rice, chicken curry with rice or salmon with spinach and rice.

“These meals aren’t just for people who are Muslim,” added Jones. “The reality is that there is food insecurity across our communities and there are people from all kinds of religions.”

The meals will be made at the Philabundance Community Kitchen in North Philly, and distributed at various community spaces.

Pennsylvania state Sen. Sharif Street supports the effort, but not just because it highlights the challenges of food insecurity.

“The second issue that we are trying to highlight this year is an issue I talked with the Shapiro administration about … food as medicine. Healthy eating can address chronic issues like diabetes, hypertension and others,” said Street.

Meal distribution sites can be found on Philbundance’s website.
