Busy day around PHS campus brings wins all around

Everywhere you looked around the Petoskey High School athletic complex Tuesday, something was going on.

From baseball at Turcott Field and soccer nearby at Northmen Stadium, to tennis and softball down campus, PHS was a busy place to be.

It was also a good night to be a Northmen sports fan – just beyond the opportunity to catch it all. Each team passed their test with flying colors.

Both Petoskey baseball and softball turned in sweeps over Sault Ste. Marie, PHS tennis earned a clean sweep over Alpena in their first home match and the Northmen soccer team earned yet another shutout in their Big North Conference opener against Cadillac.

Petoskey baseball builds a streak

PETOSKEY — It’s now six straight victories for the Petoskey baseball team after the Northmen dropped their openers downstate.

How have they been getting it done this season? The quick answer is an array of arms.

With wins of 7-2 and 3-2 against Sault Ste. Marie Tuesday, Petoskey hasn’t allowed more than two runs in those six straight games.

Against the Blue Devils in Tuesday’s opener, Petoskey’s Peyton Harmon went the distance on the mound with a pair of strikeouts across six frames and just three hits allowed, no walks.

Harmon also had a pair of RBIs, then Lucas O’Donnell, Haden Janes, Kam Horn and Brendan Swiss added an RBI each.

Petoskey’s nightcap victory came in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the sixth, as they entered the inning down 2-0. Horn doubled to center, bringing the winning two runs around. O’Donnell also had an RBI in the sixth.

Garrett Wodek was then the winning pitcher behind eight strikeouts across six innings, with four hits and a walk issued.

Petoskey will bring in Ogemaw Heights on Tuesday, April 18 up next.

Bats clicking for PHS softball

PETOSKEY — It was the first sweep of the season for the Petoskey softball team Tuesday against Sault Ste. Marie.

Petoskey earned wins of 11-5 and 5-4, collecting 13 combined hits between the two games. They’ve now earned three wins over their last four games after beginning the season 0-5.

A big part of Tuesday’s victories was the play of senior Katie Hansen, who tripled, drove in four RBIs and earned the win pitching in the opener.

Hansen pitched all six innings with nine strikeouts and three hits allowed. Only one of the runs came earned against.

Danyelle Cadarette was also 2 for 2 with a pair of RBIs, Alexis Cadarette went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Avery Leist and Kristin Shaw each had an RBI.

In game two, Danyelle Cadarette went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a triple.

Sammy Wodek claimed the win over five innings and Hansen pitched an inning with a pair of strikeouts.

Petoskey welcomes in Ogemaw Heights up next on Thursday, April 18.

Petoskey tennis rolls Alpena

PETOSKEY — As strong as the wind was whipping around the PHS tennis courts Tuesday, spending as little time as possible chasing an unpredictable ball was on the mind of many.

So, the Petoskey girls’ tennis team brought in their home victory over Alpena as quickly as they could.

Petoskey topped the Wildcats in 8-0 fashion, with three flights getting PHS there behind sweeps of their own.

SINGLES: No. 1 Katya Peck, won, 6-0, 6-0; No. 2 Tara Brantly, won, 6-3, 6-2; No. 3 Eva Rindfusz, won, 6-1, 6-1; No. 4 Charlie Todd, won, 6-3, 6-0.

DOUBLES: No. 1 Brynn Bennett/Kennedy Johnson, won 6-0, 6-1; No. 2 Lucia Andrews/Meg Gietzen, won, 6-3, 6-0; No. 3 Ava Genschaw/Natalie Overton, won, 6-0, 6-0; No. 4 Makija Howard/Eliza Rogier, won, 6-0, 6-0.
