Trailblazing mountain bike pioneer honors the sport’s rich history at Fairfax museum
Advertising Feature: This article is not produced by the newsroom. It is editorially independent of both the newsroom and any one advertiser. It’s hard to talk about mountain biking without singing the praises of Joe Breeze. The 70-year-old resident of Fairfax was part of a cadre of cyclists who created the sport on the slopes of Mount Tamalpais in the 1970s. He is credited with designing and building the first modern mountain bike (he called it the “Breezer”). He has been outspoken as an advocate for bicycle transportation. Most recently, he co-founded and is the current curator of the Marin Museum of Bicycling, which celebrates Marin County’s history as a destination for mountain and road cyclists alike. Many see Breeze as a living legend, someone who works every day to keep the wonders of cycling alive. Breeze, however, sees himself as a lifelong lover of the bicycle, a guy who simply has followed his heart.
