PESHTIGO —The Peshtigo High School girls soccer team shutout Sturgeon Bay in its home opener on Monday.

The Clippers controlled the ball for much of the first half, but Audra Bauman snuck a ball by Sturgeon Bay goalkeeper Isabella Jimenez Seyfer 15 minutes into the contest for what proved to be the game’s only goal.

“That first home game is kind of nerve wracking,” Peshtigo coach Jessica Carriveau said, “but the girls settled those nerves right away and it’s nice to get that goal first and take a little pressure off.”

The Clippers outshot Peshtigo 13-7 including an 8-4 margin in the first half, but Bulldog netminder Lucy Lemire came up with 13 saves while the defense was able to limit Sturgeon Bay’s quality chances.

“Our defense played really well,” Carriveau said. “They covered for each other extremely well and the midfield helped out. Lucy played great and had a lot of good saves. That was the most she’s been tested this year, and she held up really well.”

After Sturgeon Bay dominated time of possession in the first half, the Bulldogs pushed the action into the midfield and their offensive end in the second half while limiting the Clippers to just five shots on goal.

“I thought we did a lot better with the ball control in the second half and were able to keep it on our side of the field, so that was very helpful,” Carriveau commented.

With their second consecutive victory, the Bulldogs moved to 2-0-1 in their first season as a varsity sport.

“We are really excited about (being a varsity sport) and are looking forward to some of the recognition that comes with it,” Carriveau said, “and hopefully getting to play a playoff game or two.”

Up NextThe Bulldogs had a quick turnaround with a game at Sevastopol on Tuesday, with results unavailable at press timet. They will return home on Friday when they host Iron Mountain at 6 p.m.
