State being sued by local district over new curriculum focusing on race and cultural barriers
By Kdka News Staff,
2023-04-18Three school districts are suing the state over new teaching guidelines coming to Pennsylvania Public Schools.
According to the state, culturally relevant and sustaining education, or CRSE, aims to eliminate racial and cultural barriers to education.
Teachers are guided to encourage students to reflect on their own cultural experiences to address bias.
CRSE is set to go into effect in districts July 1, but the Mars Area, Penn Crest and Laurel school districts are hoping to block it in court.
Attorney Tom King tells the big K Morning show the guidelines are extensive and vague.
“49 new rules for your kids and mine to follow in the public schools,” said King. “It’s 49 new things for teachers to be concerned about and for parents to be worried about, whether the teacher’s want to do it or don’t want to do it.”
The policy was set in place by the Wolf administration. The Shapiro administration declined comment.
