The Pella Christian baseball team’s four game winning streak came to an end Wednesday night with a 4-2 loss on the road at Newton, while the Eagles softball team couldn’t snap their losing streak against the Cardinals in an 11-5 loss.

On the baseball diamond in Newton, the Cardinals cracked the scoreboard first with a run in the bottom of the first inning and held that 1-0 advantage until the sixth. After Eliot Menninga led off the top of the sixth with a walk, Brecken Ritzert entered as a courtesy runner and tied the game on a Corbin Westerkamp single. Westerkamp gave the Eagles the lead a batter later on a Caleb Van Arendonk single, but Newton recaptured the lead for good with three runs on two walks and three errors in the bottom of the frame to drop P.C. to 11-4 overall and 4-3 in the Little Hawkeye Conference. Grant Kelderman took the loss in 5.2 innings on the bump, allowing four unearned runs on two hits and five walks.

The Pella Christian softball team got out to an early 2-1 advantage over the Cardinals in the first inning, but things went south in the second inning. Newton batted around in the bottom of the second to plate eight runs and take a 9-2 lead. The Eagles got a run back in each of the fourth and fifth innings, but the Cardinals got them back in the sixth. P.C. plated another run in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough to prevent their losing streak from reaching 10 games. With the loss, the Eagles fell to 4-11 overall on the season and 0-7 in the conference.

Both the Pella Christian baseball and softball teams will look to get back on track Friday night, with Tulip City Showdown doubleheaders at Pella.
