The Pella School Board reviewed the district’s certified budget process at their meeting Monday. A presentation was given to highlight the current fiscal status of the district and a comparison of property tax rates over multiple years. The board scheduled a public hearing for formal consideration of the fiscal year 2024 budget on April 10th, with the goal to maintain the current overall tax rate at $14.60 per $1,000 of valuation.

Also on the agenda was review of an application to join the Iowa Local Government Risk Pool for one year — it’s a group formed by school districts to meet unique budget challenges and help them navigate the changing energy landscape. Superintendent Greg Ebeling says the concept allows natural gas to be paid through the management fund as opposed to the general fund because it’s an insurance product, relieving pressure on the main source of spending and revenue for the general fund and locking in a price. The board approved a 28E Agreement for participation in the group.

Additionally, a new longevity pay schedule for custodians, bus drivers, and food service hourly employees was moved ahead, as was the district’s career and academic plan. The board reviewed proposed alterations to the current director districts ahead of the upcoming school elections this fall as well.

At the end of the meeting, Superintendent Greg Ebeling says the first book has been challenged in 20 years, according to Ebeling. The Pella Community School District’s current book challenging policy was shared with the board, and a committee of an administrator, the librarian, one teacher, two students, and three community members are meeting to consider the challenge will be held Wednesday at 4 p.m. — their conclusion is only a recommendation, and the ultimate decision is made by the superintendent, and could be appealed to the school board.

The Pella School Board also received a presentation from Neumann Monson about ongoing construction projects in the Pella Community School District and monthly updates from all administrators.
