The Simpson College Board of Trustees has named Jay Byers as the 25th President of Simpson College, after a months-long search beginning in January of 2023 when Marsha Kelliher announced her intention to retire this summer. Byers is a Simpson graduate, and served as a member of the Board of Trustees since 2012, and previously served as the President and CEO of the Greater Des Moines Partnership. Byers said a big goal of his is to continue the plan laid out by the Board of Trustees and President Kelliher, and enhance the path Simpson is currently on.

The City of Indianola is currently in the process of acquiring a dilapidated and uninhabitable property on Highway 92, with the Indianola City Council approving a resolution in support of the project. City Manager Ben Reeves tells KNIA News the city is actively working towards obtaining the horseshoe apartments, and mitigating the negative effects of having the buildings on a major highway.

The Indianola City Council discussed parking on the downtown square during their work session Monday, which included both short-term and long-term solutions. City Manager Ben Reeves tells KNIA News the city is committed to supporting local businesses on the square, and in the short-term will have signs on the square and raise awareness about the need for open spots on the square. Reeves said the potential long-term options involve a parking time-limit enforcement.

The Indianola Downtown Merchants are bringing Ridiculous Days back to this summer on the downtown Indianola square for the second straight year. The event will feature both activities and games on the square, local vendors and food trucks, and sales from local businesses, and those attending are invited to dress up in ridiculous costumes. The event will be on Saturday, June 24th from 10am to 3pm.

Pella Police Chief Shane McSheehy recognized several officers and a community organization at an awards ceremony Thursday afternoon. McSheehy recognized Triumph Martial Arts for their collaborative efforts with the department over the past three years with self-defense classes, training for the department, and their work increasing community awareness about safety. Bryce Doane was also honored for his promotion to sergeant, and McSheehy recognized Kody Roos, Brad Vincent, Shane Cox, and Mitchell Monarchino with the “Chief’s Commendation Award,” as nominated by their peers.

Pella Police Department Holds Awards Ceremony

The Elks Lodge in Indianola is hosting a Flag Day Ceremony on Wednesday, a tradition going back over 100 years that will feature the history of the flags of the United States in addition to having local speakers. Event Chair Gene Buckley tells KNIA News the Elks Lodge is inviting the community to come participate in the ceremony, and will detail not only the flag we think of as the official flag, but flags from before the country was founded, the flag from the War of 1812, the POW/MIA Flag that recognizes prisoners of war and those missing in action, and more. The ceremony will be on June 14th at the Elks Lodge on the north side of the square on the patio beginning at 5:30pm.

Leighton State Bank is opening a new location in Knoxville which will expand the bank’s services to four communities. The branch will open late this summer on the north side of the Knoxville square at 207 E. Main Street. The location is to be up and running by the end of August or early September.

The first of two Indianola Chamber of Commerce Summer Nights Live concerts is Friday on the downtown Indianola square. Chamber President and CEO Amanda Zwanziger tells KNIA News the chamber changed the concerts to Summer Nights Live on the downtown Indianola square from Friday Night Live in Memorial Park, to have more flexibility with the days the concerts take place, and will be taking advantage of the finished construction on the Indianola downtown square. Zwanziger also said the event is family friendly with multiple activities for kids to enjoy. The Chamber will have Trainwreck on June 9th for the first show, with music from 7-9pm, and are family friendly. Find more information, tune in to today’s Let’s Talk Indianola.

Habitat for Humanity of Marion County is building a Knoxville family a new home at 502 West Rock Island Street. Project Manager Jay Weldon tells KNIA/KRLS News they are nearing the end of the project with around five weeks to go. The Knoxville High School Construction Trades Class worked four days a week on the new home.

After more than 16 years as a mainstay on KNIA/KRLS, Dr. Bob Leonard is retiring from radio on June 16th. That day will mark the final airing of “In Depth with Dr. Bob Leonard,” a state award-winning interview program and podcast that has aired every weekday on KNIA/KRLS since 2007, and has featured a wide range of voices, including local community leaders, national political figures, various authors, artists, and musicians, and several others from south central Iowa and beyond. Leonard has also overseen the news department at the station since joining the company. The community is invited to celebrate Bob’s career in radio at an open house on Thursday, June 15th from 4 to 6 p.m. at A & P Pub in Knoxville.

The 2023 National Balloon Classic begins July 28th, with the theme of “Over the Top.” The event this year includes live music on all eight nights, two nights of Fantastic Fireworks, and two Nite Glow balloon flights. A big crowd packed downtown Pella as Thursdays in Pella celebrated the rich tradition of racing in the region.
