Love Where You Live is a passion project sparked by love for the community and the desire to make Knoxville the best place it can be. The community was invited to attend the unveiling ceremony at the Auld Park Thursday. The Auld Park was the site of the first mural for the city. A good crowd was on hand for the event.

The first of two Indianola Chamber of Commerce Summer Nights Live concerts is Friday on the downtown Indianola square. The chamber changed the concerts to Summer Nights Live on the downtown Indianola square from Friday Night Live in Memorial Park, taking advantage of the finished construction on the Indianola downtown square. The Chamber will have Trainwreck on June 9th for the first show, with music from 7-9pm, and are family friendly. Find more information about the concert below.

Last night shortly after 8:00 pm, the Knoxville Fire Department was dispatched to a reported residential fire in the 100 block of South Conrey. Crews arrived to find smoke throughout the main floor of the residence. They made entry to find a dryer on fire. Crews extinguished the fire and ventilated the structure.

The Des Moines Skydivers Club in Knoxville will be putting on an Open House later this month. Christy Brokens, one of the members, tells KNIA/KRLS News, “We’re going to host an Open House and the purpose of this is just for us to get to know the community and for the community to get to know us, because skydiving is such a community focused sport and event. So we just really wanted to bring a lot of fun activities into the hangar to draw people in. Just so they can come and hang out with us and enjoy the day.”

The Indianola Community Youth Foundation is partnering with the Blank Park Zoo for local students to spend a day at the zoo later this month. ICYF Executive Director Taylor Nehring tells KNIA News the partnership is a good way to get kids outside in a fun environment over the summer.

The Knoxville Rotary presented a check to the Knoxville Hospital and Clinics for $8,500 for the purchase of AED’s (Automated External Defibrillators). Kevin Stittsworth, Director of Foundation and Public Relations Director at the Knoxville Hospital and Clinics, tells KNIA/KRLS News, “So this new fleet will be updated with the latest technology and having consistent equipment model across the facility is going to ensure we have the fast and most effective response in the event of an emergency. Basically AED’s save lives and we’re so grateful again to the Knoxville Rotary for this grant so we can purchase those.”

The annual Thursdays in Pella events hosted by the PACE Alliance returned to Central Park this week. The first theme was “Jam with the Fam,” which is traditionally the lead off to the summer’s festivities and is organized, in part, by Families First of Pella. Director Allison Kerndt says the non-profit organization aims to enhance the strength of families and provides resources for various needs. This week’s activities included the annual bike rodeo, yard games hosted by several organizations and businesses, various food vendors, and entertainment by The Dans Co, Magician TJ Regul, and the Pella City Band. The KNIA/KRLS Lil’ Big Red Radio is broadcasting weekly from Thursdays in Pella this summer. Next week’s theme is Need for Speed, and will feature several events highlighting local races.

2023 Thursdays in Pella Events Kicked Off This Week

The Indianola Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center will open for the season tomorrow, after scheduled maintenance and filling the pool is completed. The 2023 season will run until August 20th, with season passes still available for purchase, and the aquatic center opens Monday/Wednesday/Friday from 1-7, Tuesday/Thursday from 1-6, and Saturday/Sunday from 1-5 for daily admission without a season pass, and those age 2 and under swim free with a paid adult admission. Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center Opens Tomorrow

The Indianola Public Library held the annual Summer Bash event Thursday evening despite the rain canceling the outdoor portion, welcoming hundreds of community members to celebrate the return of summer with multiple activities inside the library including board games and signing up for the summer reading program. Library Director Michele Patrick tells KNIA News she encourages all kids to participate in the summer reading program.

The second annual Hartford BBQ Bash is coming in July, featuring activities including a bags tournament, water fights, live music, a farm to table dinner feed, and a smoke off meats competition. Sophia Eckert with Hartford Hometown Pride tells KNIA News they are currently taking registration for the meat smoking competition.

The City of Indianola is continuing work on the Parks Master Plan, a living document that will detail the long-term plans of current and future parks in the city. Parks and Rec Director Doug Bylund tells KNIA News a survey is available to the public right now, which will help determine the needs and wants of local parks.

The Melcher-Dallas Softball Squad went 0-2 on Saturday at the 40th Murray Invitational losing to Lamoni 7-6, and falling hard to East Union 15-2. In the Lamoni game, The Saints got down 6-3 and playing as the home team, clawed back to get it down to a one run game, but got no closer. The Saints were hampered by five errors in the loss. Peyton Anderson and Summer Karpan had two hits each with Anderson getting three RBI. Emma Clark took the loss pitching four innings. The Saints gave up nine runs in the 4th inning and could not recover. More fielding errors gave the Saints problems. Summer Karpan took the loss pitching 3 2/3 innings. Melcher-Dallas returns to action Monday hosting a double header with Orient-Macksburg.

A ribbon cutting will take place today as the Indianola Chamber of Commerce welcome’s Crouse Tree Service to the chamber. Chamber President and CEO Amanda Zwanziger tells KNIA News Crouse Tree Service specializes in commercial and residential service tree care serving Indianola and the surrounding area. The ribbon cutting is today at the parking lot on the corner of S 1st St. and E 1st Ave at 3pm, with all chamber ambassadors and members of the public invited.

The Knoxville Fire Department and several other local emergency crews responded to two incidents in Knoxville this evening. Fire Chief Cal Wyman says they were dispatched to a reported residential fire in the 100 block of South Conrey St at 8:16 p.m. The Knoxville City Fire Department responded with one engine company, one EMS company, and one command officers. The Indianola softball and baseball teams competed in separate tournaments Saturday, the softball squad at West Des Moines Valley and baseball at Martensdale-St. Mary’s. The #5 in 4A Indianola girls went 2-1 Saturday, falling to the hosting top-ranked in 5A Valley Tigers 12-0, and defeating #11 in 5A Des Moines Lincoln 4-3 and Boone 5-3. Kiley Kindelspire went 2-for-3 in both victories, racking up two triples in the process.

The vast majority of power lines that can go underground are currently in that state in the City of Pella. At Tuesday’s Pella City Council meeting, a public hearing will be held to get some of the last overhead lines converted in the community. The council will review two bids for a project to install underground conduit, box pads, and pull boxes for the electrical distribution system from Idaho Drive at the water treatment plant to the clear wells downstream at Howell Station Campground. The city’s electric distribution crew would follow up with installation of the cable and transformers. The project is estimated to cost $700,000 and would be completed by June 30th, 2024. This week’s Pella City Council meeting begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Pella Public Safety Complex.

Whether it’s Groundhog Day or a case of deja vu, the Class 1A boys state team tennis finals has had the same end result for four consecutive seasons. And despite their best efforts to end the reign of the Saints, the Pella boys tennis team fell to Xavier in the state championship match Thursday 5-1 at the University of Iowa tennis courts in Coralville. The Dutch could not climb out of an early hole against the now four-time defending title winners, dropping the first set in five of the six matches on the court. Beau Bush earned the lone Dutch victory, and despite holding a lead in a pivotal set three, Jack Briggs ultimately fell in the No. 1 singles match, which gave the Saints their best of nine matches needed to claim the top trophy again. This is the fourth consecutive season Pella has placed 2nd in the Class 1A tournament.

Head coach Brent Matthias has announced the hiring of Callie Dutton as a full-time assistant coach for the Simpson College softball team. The program’s first full-time assistant coach in almost 25 years, Dutton is no stranger to the American Rivers Conference. She arrived to Dubuque as a sophomore in 2020 and earned the starting role at third base for the next three seasons, helping the Spartans win a share of the regular season conference title in 2022. Dutton hit .388 with three home runs and 25 RBIs that season while also receiving All-A-R-C Second Team honors.

Simpson College Softball Announces Full-Time Assistant Coach

Central College is offering Junior Golf Nights on the school’s Ryerson Practice Facility this summer. Junior high and high school players may participate in any or all of the six sessions. Cost is $15 per session and golf balls are provided. They’ll be conducted June 8, 15, 22, and 29 and July 6 and 13. Players should meet at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex parking lot, southwest of P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium.

Pleasantville won the opener of the tournament Saturday over Bedford 3-2 behind the pitching of Peyton Major who threw 76 pitches in the game. In the opener Caleb Cook was 2-of-4 at the plate as was Braylon Binigham, who also had two RBIs.
