The Indianola High School softball team participated in the annual “Strike Out Cancer” game against rival Southeast Polk last week, a longstanding tradition to raise funds, awareness, and to support those around the programs who have been affected by cancer. Head coach Stacy Evans tells KNIA News the annual game has honored many former players and coaches who have been affected by cancer, and presents an opportunity to come together as a community.

The Warren County Fair begins July 26th, featuring four nights of grandstand events that includes a pair of concerts. Fair Director Jo Reynolds tells KNIA News the grandstand events include Figure 8 Races, concerts by Easton Corbin and Sawyer Brown, a demolition derby, and grain truck races. The Indianola Public Library is continuing their teen hangouts program over the summer that includes multiple new activities. Kelsey McFarland with the library tells KNIA News they will have bleach art for white tee-shirts, and DIY boba tea to create, all taking place on Wednesday’s throughout the summer. McFarland also said the classic teen events such as the NERF Attack, glow karaoke, and ice cream and paint classes will all continue to take place. To listen to the full interview, click below.

Indianola Public Library Continuing Teen Hangouts Program

One week into the softball season, and Knoxville holds a 3-1 record and even at 1-1 in the South Central Conference. The Panthers just completed a busy first week of games defeating Oskaloosa, Newton and Cardinal while dropping their conference opener to Davis County. Knoxville is one of many teams from the SCC that has a chance to win the conference, which has eluded Knoxville since the Panthers returned to the South Central in 2014. Coach Carla Smith tells KNIA/KRLS Sports there are no days off with the likes of Albia, Clarke and Cardinal, who have all won state titles in the past.

Knoxville Softball Poised For Tough Conference Slate

Kerry Madsen did not find the runner first, but he finished 1st in the 410 A-Main Saturday at the Knoxville Raceway as heard live on KNIA. Madsen had to deal with Austin McCarl, Aaron Reutzel and Chase Randall before the track went rubber down the final ten laps and Madsen just had to hold his line for the win. Madsen told KNIA/KRLS Sports as Reutzel passed him about midway through the race, he noticed where he needed to run.

The Indianola High School Class of 2023 graduates today, with 250 seniors walking the stage to receive their diplomas. The graduation ceremony will be livestreamed for those unable to attend. The student speaker will be Logan Piper, with Madame Priebe being the keynote speaker. The ceremony will recognize honors students, in addition to those joining the military. Indianola High School Class of 2023 Graduates Today

The Wildcats struck first with a run in the first, but Indianola answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to lead 2-1 after the first. Both teams scored again in the second with the Indians leading 3-2, before a wild third inning included the Wildcats scoring four runs and the Indians scoring three to tie the game at six, and the offense continued in the fourth with the Indians adding two more to lead 8-6 after the fourth. The Wildcats earned another run back in the sixth, but the Indians held on to win the contest 8-7 to win their third straight game.

Let’s Talk Indianola – Warren County Fair

Funeral services for Marilyn Charline Miller, 83, of Knoxville, will be held Friday, June 2, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Knoxville. Interment will be at the Graceland Cemetery following the service. Family will receive friends on Thursday June 1st from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Knoxville. Memorials may be made in care of Marilyn’s family to be used for the Music Therapy Program at Grand Meadows Luther Manor, where she had resided the last few years.

The park rangers at Lake Red Rock would like to remind the public about camping safety this holiday weekend. Park Ranger Tracy Spry says it’s important to supervise all children, especially at campgrounds near waterways, and to know where they are headed at all times. She reminds campers to only start fires in designated areas. Additionally, especially with many campgrounds closed, those traveling through full lots should be prepared for extra pedestrian traffic.
