A Marion County Poverty Conference will be held next week at the Knoxville High School Media Center. The conference will be led by Jason Henry, CEO of the Well. The event is free and open to the public. A few of the items of discussion include what motivates social class values and behaviors. How middle-class systems and structures clash with those living in poverty and poverty’s generational impact on families.

Indianola Parks and Rec hosted stories about Iowa’s veterans during their Afternoon Adventures Speaker Series earlier this week, hosting Sara Maniscalco Robinson, formerly in the Iowa National Guard Public Affairs unit. Maniscalco Robinson tells KNIA News her program features the stories of Iowa’s veterans through videos, and the video she showed in Indianola had a high priority on the true meaning of Memorial Day, that included showing the effects on families who lost loved ones.

Tonight is the annual Indianola Public Library Summer Bash, as the community is welcomed to the library parking lot to celebrate the return of warmer weather and the beginning of summer activities. Adult Services Librarian Jacy West tells KNIA News food trucks, ice cream, lawn games, face painting, and giant bouncy houses will be in the library parking lot, with air conditioning inside the library and activities such as board games and kids toys available. West said everyone is invited to come and celebrate with library and city staff. The Kick Off Summer event is from 6-8pm.

Indianola Library Summer Bash Tonight

The Marion County Extension Office will be offering a Jam Workshop which is offered to youth fourth grade and up. The students get to attend the workshop and learn safe methods for making jam. Youth Coordinator with the 4-H Extension Office, Ashtin Wells tells KNiA/KRLS News, “It is only $5 to register for that and that means you get to make jam and take it home.”

Indianola Parks and Rec is hosting a program highlighting stories from Iowa’s veterans in their next installment of their Afternoon Adventures series this afternoon. Becky Lane with Indianola Parks and Rec tells KNIA News Sara Maniscalco Robinson, and Iowa National Guard Broadcast Journalist since 1997, will discuss the preserved stories of Iowa’s veterans, including accounts of the day Pearl Harbor was bombed, the morning the Twin Towers were attacked, and what it was like to be a woman in the military in WWII among many others. The Afternoon Adventure Speaker Series will be at 2pm at the Indianola Activity Center, and is free to the public. The program is funded by Humanities Iowa, a private, non-profit state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Summer reading programs begin at the Pella Public Library after classes at local schools have now dismissed. Youth Services Librarian Katie Dreyer says reading challenges for prizes will return, with digital options for reading logs. Pella Christian High School theatre once again enjoyed a successful year on the stage. From their multiple All-State speech nominations in the winter, to the awards received for their fall musical “Cinderella,” performers Abby Dart and Avery Verhoef were thankful to perform with the group this past academic year. The PC troupe was honored with Outstanding Overall Technical and Creative Achievement by the Iowa High School Musical Theatre Awards, the top technical honor for a high school and fourth time for PC’s Tech Team.
