The City of Indianola is continuing work on the Parks Master Plan, a living document that will detail the long-term plans of current and future parks in the city. Parks and Rec Director Doug Bylund tells KNIA News a survey is available to the public right now, which will help determine the needs and wants of local parks.

The Knoxville Rotary presented a check to the Knoxville Hospital and Clinics for $8,500 for the purchase of AED’s (Automated External Defibrillators). Kevin Stittsworth, Director of Foundation and Public Relations Director at the Knoxville Hospital and Clinics, tells KNIA/KRLS News, “So this new fleet will be updated with the latest technology and having consistent equipment model across the facility is going to ensure we have the fast and most effective response in the event of an emergency. Basically AED’s save lives and we’re so grateful again to the Knoxville Rotary for this grant so we can purchase those.”

Several KNIA/KRLS area high school soccer players are earning postseason honors. Sisters Mia and Abby Warner were selected to the Class 2A All-Tournament team by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union for their performances as part of the top four finish for the Pella girls soccer team. Three Norwalk players were named to the Class 3A All-Tournament Team in senior Jack Brown, junior Caden Endres and freshman Tyden Eng, after their 3A runner-up finish Saturday.

Two Central Students Selected for National Science Foundation Summer Research

A ribbon cutting will take place today as the Indianola Chamber of Commerce welcome’s Crouse Tree Service to the chamber. Chamber President and CEO Amanda Zwanziger tells KNIA News Crouse Tree Service specializes in commercial and residential service tree care serving Indianola and the surrounding area. The ribbon cutting is today at the parking lot on the corner of S 1st St. and E 1st Ave at 3pm, with all chamber ambassadors and members of the public invited.

Spirit of Pella is hosting an official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the non-profit organization’s first mural. The event will be held on Thursday, June 8 at 10 am in front of the new mural on the Brew Coffeehouse located at 626 Franklin Street as special guests Mayor Don DeWaard, Dutch Expert Milly Vande Kieft, and Muralist Hannah Heschke share a few remarks about the painting.

Head coach Brent Matthias has announced the hiring of Callie Dutton as a full-time assistant coach for the Simpson College softball team. The program’s first full-time assistant coach in almost 25 years, Dutton is no stranger to the American Rivers Conference. She arrived to Dubuque as a sophomore in 2020 and earned the starting role at third base for the next three seasons, helping the Spartans win a share of the regular season conference title in 2022. Dutton hit .388 with three home runs and 25 RBIs that season while also receiving All-A-R-C Second Team honors.

Former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson was at Pella Cooperative Electric Friday. Ashlan Burton has been named as a full-time assistant coach for the Simpson College track and field men’s and women’s programs. Burton is a seven-time NCAA Division II All-American at the University of Central Missouri, returns to her home state of Iowa after a one-year stint at Lees Summit North High School where she served as the head strength and conditioning coach as well as a throws coach for the track and field program. The Urbandale, Iowa native will work primarily with the Storm throwers.

The first of two Indianola Chamber of Commerce Summer Nights Live concerts is a week away on the downtown Indianola square. The chamber changed the concerts to Summer Nights Live on the downtown Indianola square from Friday Night Live in Memorial Park, taking advantage of the finished construction on the Indianola downtown square. The Chamber will have Trainwreck on June 9th for the first show, with music from 7-9pm, and are family friendly. Find more information about the concert below.

The Indianola softball and baseball teams competed in separate tournaments Saturday, the softball squad at West Des Moines Valley and baseball at Martensdale-St. Mary’s. The #5 in 4A Indianola girls went 2-1 Saturday, falling to the hosting top-ranked in 5A Valley Tigers 12-0, and defeating #11 in 5A Des Moines Lincoln 4-3 and Boone 5-3. Kiley Kindelspire went 2-for-3 in both victories, racking up two triples in the process.

The Indianola Public Library held the annual Summer Bash event Thursday evening despite the rain canceling the outdoor portion, welcoming hundreds of community members to celebrate the return of summer with multiple activities inside the library including board games and signing up for the summer reading program. Library Director Michele Patrick tells KNIA News she encourages all kids to participate in the summer reading program.

Love Where You Live is a passion project sparked by love for the community and the desire to make Knoxville the best place it can be. The community was invited to attend the unveiling ceremony at the Auld Park Thursday. The Auld Park was the site of the first mural for the city. A good crowd was on hand for the event.

The Indianola Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center will open for the season tomorrow, after scheduled maintenance and filling the pool is completed. The 2023 season will run until August 20th, with season passes still available for purchase, and the aquatic center opens Monday/Wednesday/Friday from 1-7, Tuesday/Thursday from 1-6, and Saturday/Sunday from 1-5 for daily admission without a season pass, and those age 2 and under swim free with a paid adult admission. A rough stretch continued for the Pella softball team at the Oskaloosa tournament Saturday, falling to #14 in 3A Chariton 4-0 and 11-6 to Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont. The Dutch offense could not solve Chargers’ starter Layne Braby, tallying just four hits in the contest. While the Dutch bats got going against the Rockets, they had to do so from behind after giving up five runs in the first inning. Payton Lyons was 3-for-3 in that game with a home run. Pella has dropped six games in a row and will try to find their footing Monday in a doubleheader against #1 in 4A Dallas Center-Grimes on the road.

Pella Softball Falls at Oskaloosa Tournament

Whether it’s Groundhog Day or a case of deja vu, the Class 1A boys state team tennis finals has had the same end result for four consecutive seasons. And despite their best efforts to end the reign of the Saints, the Pella boys tennis team fell to Xavier in the state championship match Thursday 5-1 at the University of Iowa tennis courts in Coralville. The Dutch could not climb out of an early hole against the now four-time defending title winners, dropping the first set in five of the six matches on the court. Beau Bush earned the lone Dutch victory, and despite holding a lead in a pivotal set three, Jack Briggs ultimately fell in the No. 1 singles match, which gave the Saints their best of nine matches needed to claim the top trophy again. This is the fourth consecutive season Pella has placed 2nd in the Class 1A tournament.

The second annual Hartford BBQ Bash is coming in July, featuring activities including a bags tournament, water fights, live music, a farm to table dinner feed, and a smoke off meats competition. The Des Moines Skydivers Club in Knoxville will be putting on an Open House later this month. Christy Brokens, one of the members, tells KNIA/KRLS News, “We’re going to host an Open House and the purpose of this is just for us to get to know the community and for the community to get to know us, because skydiving is such a community focused sport and event. So we just really wanted to bring a lot of fun activities into the hangar to draw people in. Just so they can come and hang out with us and enjoy the day.”
