An interactive week of activities incorporating the history of Pella’s Dutch heritage returns to the Pella Historical Village this summer. Lisa Zylstra is bringing back the Dutch Day Camp for the 31st year on July 17th to 21st, a program that includes Dutch games, speaking and singing in the native language, crafts, and history lessons. The camp is open to incoming 5th and 6th graders and programming will be co-hosted by Jim Uitermarkt and Dr. Ronald Rietveld. Registration costs $80 for Pella Historical Society members and $100 for non-members, and includes a daily sack lunch. Several KNIA/KRLS area high school soccer players are earning postseason honors. Sisters Mia and Abby Warner were selected to the Class 2A All-Tournament team by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union for their performances as part of the top four finish for the Pella girls soccer team. Three Norwalk players were named to the Class 3A All-Tournament Team in senior Jack Brown, junior Caden Endres and freshman Tyden Eng, after their 3A runner-up finish Saturday.

A ribbon cutting will take place today as the Indianola Chamber of Commerce welcome’s Crouse Tree Service to the chamber. Chamber President and CEO Amanda Zwanziger tells KNIA News Crouse Tree Service specializes in commercial and residential service tree care serving Indianola and the surrounding area. The ribbon cutting is today at the parking lot on the corner of S 1st St. and E 1st Ave at 3pm, with all chamber ambassadors and members of the public invited.

Central College is offering Junior Golf Nights on the school’s Ryerson Practice Facility this summer. Junior high and high school players may participate in any or all of the six sessions. Cost is $15 per session and golf balls are provided. They’ll be conducted June 8, 15, 22, and 29 and July 6 and 13. Players should meet at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex parking lot, southwest of P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium.

Central Offers Junior Golf Nights

The Indianola Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center will open for the season tomorrow, after scheduled maintenance and filling the pool is completed. The 2023 season will run until August 20th, with season passes still available for purchase, and the aquatic center opens Monday/Wednesday/Friday from 1-7, Tuesday/Thursday from 1-6, and Saturday/Sunday from 1-5 for daily admission without a season pass, and those age 2 and under swim free with a paid adult admission. Big Fourth Inning Propels Indianola to Baseball Win Over Pella

The first of two Indianola Chamber of Commerce Summer Nights Live concerts is Friday on the downtown Indianola square. The chamber changed the concerts to Summer Nights Live on the downtown Indianola square from Friday Night Live in Memorial Park, taking advantage of the finished construction on the Indianola downtown square. The Chamber will have Trainwreck on June 9th for the first show, with music from 7-9pm, and are family friendly. Find more information about the concert below.

Spirit of Pella is hosting an official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the non-profit organization’s first mural. The event will be held on Thursday, June 8 at 10 am in front of the new mural on the Brew Coffeehouse located at 626 Franklin Street as special guests Mayor Don DeWaard, Dutch Expert Milly Vande Kieft, and Muralist Hannah Heschke share a few remarks about the painting.

The Knoxville Rotary presented a check to the Knoxville Hospital and Clinics for $8,500 for the purchase of AED’s (Automated External Defibrillators). Kevin Stittsworth, Director of Foundation and Public Relations Director at the Knoxville Hospital and Clinics, tells KNIA/KRLS News, “So this new fleet will be updated with the latest technology and having consistent equipment model across the facility is going to ensure we have the fast and most effective response in the event of an emergency. Basically AED’s save lives and we’re so grateful again to the Knoxville Rotary for this grant so we can purchase those.”

The vast majority of power lines that can go underground are currently in that state in the City of Pella. At Tuesday’s Pella City Council meeting, a public hearing will be held to get some of the last overhead lines converted in the community. The council will review two bids for a project to install underground conduit, box pads, and pull boxes for the electrical distribution system from Idaho Drive at the water treatment plant to the clear wells downstream at Howell Station Campground. The city’s electric distribution crew would follow up with installation of the cable and transformers. The project is estimated to cost $700,000 and would be completed by June 30th, 2024. This week’s Pella City Council meeting begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Pella Public Safety Complex.

The Indianola Public Library held the annual Summer Bash event Thursday evening despite the rain canceling the outdoor portion, welcoming hundreds of community members to celebrate the return of summer with multiple activities inside the library including board games and signing up for the summer reading program. Ashlan Burton has been named as a full-time assistant coach for the Simpson College track and field men’s and women’s programs. Burton is a seven-time NCAA Division II All-American at the University of Central Missouri, returns to her home state of Iowa after a one-year stint at Lees Summit North High School where she served as the head strength and conditioning coach as well as a throws coach for the track and field program. The Urbandale, Iowa native will work primarily with the Storm throwers.

Former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson was at Pella Cooperative Electric Friday. The Republican challenger discussed energy policy and focused criticism on President Joe Biden for his policies in energy, at the southern border, Afghanistan, and the federal budget.

The second annual Hartford BBQ Bash is coming in July, featuring activities including a bags tournament, water fights, live music, a farm to table dinner feed, and a smoke off meats competition. A rough stretch continued for the Pella softball team at the Oskaloosa tournament Saturday, falling to #14 in 3A Chariton 4-0 and 11-6 to Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont. The Dutch offense could not solve Chargers’ starter Layne Braby, tallying just four hits in the contest. While the Dutch bats got going against the Rockets, they had to do so from behind after giving up five runs in the first inning. Payton Lyons was 3-for-3 in that game with a home run. Pella has dropped six games in a row and will try to find their footing Monday in a doubleheader against #1 in 4A Dallas Center-Grimes on the road.

Let’s Talk Indianola – Library Summer Bash

Whether it’s Groundhog Day or a case of deja vu, the Class 1A boys state team tennis finals has had the same end result for four consecutive seasons. And despite their best efforts to end the reign of the Saints, the Pella boys tennis team fell to Xavier in the state championship match Thursday 5-1 at the University of Iowa tennis courts in Coralville. The Dutch could not climb out of an early hole against the now four-time defending title winners, dropping the first set in five of the six matches on the court. Beau Bush earned the lone Dutch victory, and despite holding a lead in a pivotal set three, Jack Briggs ultimately fell in the No. 1 singles match, which gave the Saints their best of nine matches needed to claim the top trophy again. This is the fourth consecutive season Pella has placed 2nd in the Class 1A tournament.

Love Where You Live is a passion project sparked by love for the community and the desire to make Knoxville the best place it can be. The community was invited to attend the unveiling ceremony at the Auld Park Thursday. The Auld Park was the site of the first mural for the city. A good crowd was on hand for the event.

The Indianola baseball and softball teams are back in action tonight for a single Little Hawkeye Conference game on the road at Pella. The Indians baseball team is looking for their first conference win after getting swept by Pella Christian in their opener on Wednesday, while the Indians softball team is flying high after scoring 32 runs in their opener against the Eagles. Head coach Stacy Evans said the Indians know that every conference win is crucial, and there are no easy games, so they will have to bring their “A” game and focus 100% on their opponent to get a win. Both games will be broadcast live, with softball on 92.1 KRLS beginning at 6:45, and baseball on 94.3 KNIA with pregame beginning at 7pm.
