Dutch Baseball Sweeps Newton; Softball Swept by Cardinals

The 2023 season ended with a trophy for the Pella girls tennis team. Pella placed 4th during Tuesday’s semifinals and finals matches, falling 5-0 to eventual champions Waterloo Columbus and in a hard-fought back and forth with Central DeWitt 5-4, which included two third-set tiebreakers the Dutch ended up losing — including the final doubles match with the 3rd place trophy on the line. Wins for Pella came from Emily Blom, Alloree Else, and Bryn Higginbotham in singles, and Claire Smock fell in one of the two tiebreakers. Mallory Westerkamp and Bryn Higginbotham were able to win the fourth match for Pella, but the match came down to #1 singles after Smock/Blom fell in their doubles match. Else and Lily VanDusseldorp held a slim lead in the first set, but couldn’t manage to close it out, losing 5-7. The second set was a decisive 6-3 victory for the Dutch. With all other matches finished, the meet was decided in a match tiebreak that went the way of the Sabers.

The class 3A #7 Knoxville Baseball Squad seemingly cannot win a game the conventional way. But the Panthers are winning, and they did just that Wednesday night with a 6-4 victory over class 3A #6 Ballard as heard live on 95.3 KNIA. The Panthers fell behind again in the 1st inning when Ballard plated three runs all unearned as starting pitcher Trey Wight struggled and gave way to Koby Higginbotham, who shut down Ballard in 4 1/3 innings surrendering just two hits and striking out seven. Trenton Kingery had the big bat as he went 2/3 with two home runs and four RBI. Coach Turner Devore tells KNIA/KRLS Sports, Kingery has been working a lot lately in the batting cage, and getting to know what pitches to see.

The Twin Cedars Softball Squad started slow, but finished fast as the Sabers took down Seymour in a come-from-behind 4-3 decision in eight innings. Jillian French surrendered three runs in the top of the 1st inning, but settled down to shut down the Warriors the rest of the way, striking out 13. Meanwhile, the Sabers offense caught on as Rylee Dunkin, Kisha Reed, Kennedi Ford, and Kellie Stevenson had two hits each with Dunkin stealing three bases. It was Ford who got the game winner as she singled to right with French on 1st base. As the Seymour right fielder fumbled the ball, French was able to score the walk off run. The Sabers host Cardinal tonight.

Pella Girls Soccer Advances to 2A State Semifinals

The Pella Christian baseball and softball teams begin a busy week tonight by heading south to face Albia in non-conference action. The Eagles summer sports teams will each play single games today, Thursday, and Friday while playing in a doubleheader Wednesday and competing in a tournament Saturday. Following a 3-1 effort last week, the Pella Christian baseball squad squares off with a Blue Demons team that has struggled to a 1-6 start to the season. The Eagles fell to Grinnell to start last week, but grabbed wins over Moravia, Pleasantville and Des Moines Christian, while Albia lost all four of their games to Centerville, Clarke, and Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont.

The Simpson College men’s soccer program will have a new assistant coach for the next year, as former Storm athlete Marcus Varnum will be the programs first full-time assistant. Varnum was a four-time Iowa Conference selection during his time at Simpson from 2012 to 2015, and tallied 21 goals and 18 assists while at Simpson. He landed on the All-IIAC Honorable Mention Team in 2012 before garnering First Team All-IIAC honors in 2013 and 2015 and Second Team recognition in 2014. After graduating from Simpson with a degree in business management, Varnum immediately began to carve out an impressive coaching career. He returned to Ankeny High School as an assistant coach while also serving as a part-time assistant at Simpson both for Isaacson and his former Storm teammate and current head women’s soccer coach Jeremy Reinert.

Let’s Talk Pella – Pella Christian Theater Awards

The annual Thursdays in Pella events hosted by the PACE Alliance return to Central Park this evening. The first theme is “Jam with the Fam,” which is traditionally the lead off to the summer’s festivities. This evening’s festival starts at 6 p.m. and includes the annual bike rodeo, yard games hosted by several organizations and businesses, various food vendors, and entertainment by The Dans Co, Magician TJ Regul, and the Pella City Band concluding activities at 8 p.m. The KNIA/KRLS Lil’ Big Red Radio is broadcasting weekly from Thursdays in Pella this summer.
