The Simpson College Board of Trustees has named Jay Byers as the 25th President of Simpson College, after a months-long search beginning in January of 2023 when Marsha Kelliher announced her intention to retire this summer. Byers is a Simpson graduate, and served as a member of the Board of Trustees since 2012, and previously served as the President and CEO of the Greater Des Moines Partnership. Byers said a big goal of his is to continue the plan laid out by the Board of Trustees and President Kelliher, and enhance the path Simpson is currently on.

The Indianola Downtown Merchants are bringing Ridiculous Days back to this summer on the downtown Indianola square for the second straight year. The event will feature both activities and games on the square, local vendors and food trucks, and sales from local businesses, and those attending are invited to dress up in ridiculous costumes. The event will be on Saturday, June 24th from 10am to 3pm.

Indianola Ridiculous Days Coming June 24th

The first of two Indianola Chamber of Commerce Summer Nights Live concerts is tonight on the downtown Indianola square. Chamber President and CEO Amanda Zwanziger tells KNIA News the chamber changed the concerts to Summer Nights Live on the downtown Indianola square from Friday Night Live in Memorial Park, to have more flexibility with the days the concerts take place, and will be taking advantage of the finished construction on the Indianola downtown square. Zwanziger also said the event is family friendly with multiple activities for kids to enjoy. The Chamber will have Trainwreck playing from 7-9pm, with the square and activities beginning at 6pm. Indianola Chamber Summer Nights Live Concert Tonight

The Central College volleyball team is set to run five different camps this summer, providing opportunities for student-athletes in grades 5-12 to work on their skills. The camps will be directed by head coach Jeanne Czipri, assistant coach Laura de Rosales as well as other members of the coaching staff and current players. In 2021, Czipri led the program back to the American Rivers Conference tournament for the first time since 2016, posting a 15-13 overall record. The Dutch were 10-15 in 2022.

The class 3A #3 Knoxville Baseball Squad thumped Clarke on Friday night 15-0 in five innings. Trenton Kingery went 4/4 with two home runs, a double and a single and five RBI. Beau Leisure also got into the offensive show with a double, a homer and two RBI. On the softball diamond next door at Clarke, the class 4A #15 Panther softball squad was enjoying an 11-4 win over the Indians. The bats were alive again as Knoxville outhit Clarke 14-10 with three Panthers socking home runs as Ciara Heffron, Brittany Bacorn, and Ashlyn Finarty helped herself out in the circle with three RBI. Finarty was the winning pitcher going the distance striking out six. Knoxville will head to Creston today, which is the hometown of Coach Carla Smith to play three games. Knoxville will get Dallas Center-Grimes, Winterset, and Clarinda. Smith tells KNIA/KRLS Sports, while the first two games will be tough, they want to compete with those teams to give themselves an idea how they stack up.

A big crowd packed downtown Pella as Thursdays in Pella celebrated the rich tradition of racing in the region. Race drivers from seven Central Iowa race tracks were on hand to display their race cars and meet their fans, hosting several activities and games for kids, and giving out many prizes and snacks.

A Marion County Poverty Conference was held at the Knoxville High School Media Center Monday. The conference was led by Jayson Henry, CEO of the Well. A few of the items discussed included what motivates social class values and behaviors, how middle-class systems and structures clash with those living in poverty and poverty’s generational impact on families.

Coal Miner’s Day is always a big event for the history of the town of Melcher-Dallas. The Coal Miner’s Museum will be open from noon until 4 p.m. Saturday, June 24. The 2023 event will be a two-day affair that honors the past and provides some fun activities for this year. The event is June 23 and 24. The Friday portion of the event will include music in the park starting at 5 p.m. along with some inflatables. There will also be a bags tournament in the park starting at 6:30 p.m.

The Elks Lodge in Indianola is hosting a Flag Day Ceremony on Wednesday, a tradition going back over 100 years that will feature the history of the flags of the United States in addition to having local speakers. Event Chair Gene Buckley tells KNIA News the Elks Lodge is inviting the community to come participate in the ceremony, and will detail not only the flag we think of as the official flag, but flags from before the country was founded, the flag from the War of 1812, the POW/MIA Flag that recognizes prisoners of war and those missing in action, and more. The ceremony will be on June 14th at the Elks Lodge on the north side of the square on the patio beginning at 5:30pm.

The City of Indianola is currently in the process of acquiring a dilapidated and uninhabitable property on Highway 92, with the Indianola City Council approving a resolution in support of the project. City Manager Ben Reeves tells KNIA News the city is actively working towards obtaining the horseshoe apartments, and mitigating the negative effects of having the buildings on a major highway.

Funeral services will be held for Carl D. Horman age 92 of Pella on Tuesday, June 13th at 10:30am at the Trinity Reformed Church in Pella. Burial will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery in Pella. Visitation will begin after 2:00pm Monday at the Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home where the family will be present Monday from 4:00-6:00pm. Memorial contributions are preferred for Gideon’s International or the Hospice of Pella Comfort House. Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

It is always a special moment when a driver that is not a World of Outlaws regular wins against the Outlaws. It is even more special, and impressive when a driver dominated in the fashion that Brian Brown did Friday night at the Knoxville Raceway as he led every lap and won by almost five seconds while Chase Young took the Pro Sprints class as heard on KNIA. Brown jumped from his 3rd starting position to lead by the backstretch and ran away from everyone lapping up to 19th spot.
