KNIA/KRLS Home Shopping Extravaganza to Start Tuesday
The KNIA/KRLS Home Shopping Extravaganza returns on Tuesday for the first of a three-day run. Participants can call the studios and purchase items from local businesses and those around the Midwest at discounted prices, including gift certificates at restaurants and retailers, car services, hotel stays, entertainment, and more. Hours for the KNIA/KRLS Home Shopping Extravaganza will be from 10 a.m. until noon and 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. There will be a presale tomorrow from 8-11 a.m. and on Monday from 1:30-5 p.m. KNIA/KRLS Sales Manager Trevor Castle says that the presale is a great way for listeners to ensure they get what they are looking for.
Union Street Players Hosting Murder Mystery
The Union Street Players invite the community to two nights of mystery and meals. The local theater troupe is hosting Curse of the Parrot Island Treasure on Friday, September 29th and Saturday, September 30th at 6:30 p.m. The event includes a three-course meal catered by Liberty Street Kitchen and costume rental from the Union Street Players Costume Shop. Knoxville Homecoming Parade is Today
The Knoxville Homecoming Parade is taking place today at 3:00 pm. The parade route and staging area will be closed off starting at 2:20, so plan an alternative route when driving. The parade route including the staging area and barricaded roads will start just east of Ken Locke Stadium and continue east on Main Street. It will then head south for one block on S 4th Street, and then head west on Robinson Street back to Ken Locke. The actual parade will start in front of Peace Tree Brewing and end on the intersection of Robinson and S Roche Street.

Oskaloosa Schools Names New Director of Dining Services
A new chef is leading the food service program at Oskaloosa Schools this year and will usher in a new vision and opportunity for students and staff meals. Most recently, Oldes served as the executive chef of One Eleven Public House in Knoxville, Iowa. There, she oversaw recipe creation, menu planning, food costing, and managing a cooking team. Oskaloosa locals also may recognize Oldes as the former executive chef and owner of On the Green, which has new ownership and is now known as Wood Iron Grille.
Knoxville Rotary Club Holding a Thelma’s Fried Chicken Fundraiser Tomorrow
The Knoxville Rotary Club is holding a Thelma’s famous fried chicken dinner fundraiser tomorrow. Tickets for this dinner are $10 and can be purchased at Croghan + Russell CPA, Johnson, Lane & Hughes Law Office, Knoxville Chiropractic Clinic, Sundance Realty, or Treasured Portraits. The dinners can be picked up at the Sprint Car Hall of Fame parking lot from 4:30-6:30 pm. This fundraiser is to support Rotary community projects such as flags on Highway 14, Youth RYLA, and human trafficking prevention.
Peace Tree Brewing Co. seeks new ownership
The owner of Peace Tree Brewing Co. announced Sept. 14 that she plans to sell her business. Megan McKay, who founded one of Iowa’s first craft breweries and the first 100% woman-owned Iowa brewery nearly 15 years ago, said she is seeking a new owner or ownership group to propel the company forward.
Pella Library Hosting Open-Mic StorySLAM Event
The Pella Library, in collaboration with Swiss storyteller coach, Joel Blom, has announced its first open-mic StorySLAM event. The theme of the night is “coming home.”. A StorySLAM is an opportunity for anyone with a true story to share around the night’s theme. Stories should be five minutes or less and true, as recalled by the storyteller. Audience feedback and moderated discussion is encouraged.
Central College to Launch Forever Dutch Lager
Central College released Forever Dutch Lager Friday. Central is the first private college in Iowa to partner with a local brewery to offer a signature craft beer. With Forever Dutch lager, 15% of sales will go toward the Journey Scholarship Fund. This collaborative effort brings together a local brewery, Gezellig Brewing Co. in Newton, owned by Betsy Duffy and Mindi Vanden Bosch, and a local business partner, Pella Hops Co. owned by BJ Stokesbary, to support a common goal.
West Ridge Specialty Care Fall Festival Happening Next Thursday
West Ridge Specialty Care in Knoxville will be holding a fall festival on Thursday, September 28th. This is a free community event from 4:00-7:00 pm which will include kids activities, a free chili dinner, and live music. 100+ Men on a Mission – Red Rock Presents Check to Crisis Canines of the Midlands
100+ Men on a Mission – Red Rock presented a $10,000 check to Crisis Canines of Midlands on Monday. Crisis Canines of Midlands was founded by Justin and Rebecca Smith in 2022 after certifying K9 “Glory” as the second Crisis Response Therapy K9 in the state of Iowa. Justin is a critical care paramedic and battalion chief in the Knoxville Fire Department, while Rebecca is a veterinarian and co-owner of Midland Prairie Veterinary Services. Justin says that the organization’s purpose is to help individuals affected by or responding to crises and disasters.
Five Bands to Perform at Pella All-Original Music Showcase
A local musician aims to highlight original music at an upcoming performance on the Tulip Toren. Chris Hopkins says he is organizing the Pella All-Original Music Showcase on Saturday, September 16th, with five bands performing their music from noon to 8 p.m. Hopkins says the five performances will highlight originally written and composed music from the area. Webb Shadle Public Library Hosting Author Linda McCann on September 29th
Author Linda McCann will present her latest book, Iowa’s Rosie the Riveters, at the Webb Shadle Public Library in Pleasantville next week. McCann’s new book focuses on Rosie the Riveters in Iowa, which was a name used to encourage women to go to work during World War II as men fought in the war. During that time, Iowa had 70 businesses that used women to meet production of military needs. McCann spoke with 35 women who had worked as Rosie’s, with some working in Iowa and others that went to the West Coast. During the presentation, she will discuss those conversations, while also exploring Iowa history and stories. Copies of Iowa’s Rosie the Riveters will be available for purchase and signing for $20 at the event.
