PEKIN, Ill. – The City of Pekin is kicking off its 200th anniversary with the mayor’s State of the City address.
Even leaders from outside communities gathered to hear what Mary Burress had to say Friday.
Burress tells 25 News she hopes pride in the city, by residents and in government, is renewed.
“We’re starting to fill positions for department heads that have not been filled in quite some time,” said Burress. “With that, we are being very positive.”
Burress’ message comes after tension on the Pekin City Council at times before and since she was elected mayor, leading to the resignation of one of her sharpest critics, Becky Cloyd.
Another thing Burress is positive about, is the local economy and what the city is now doing to help.
“We are being aggressive on making Pekin grow and prosper,” Burress told 25 News. “We have a vision to develop our community, to change what’s necessary, and what’s coming here in the City of Pekin.”
As for the bicentennial year, the Burress says there should be new events and activities almost every month to celebrate. There is also a special website available.
