Neighbors hope surveillance video can help ID driver who runs over family of geese in Peabody

PEABODY, Mass. — You can hear homeowner James Gemma on his neighbor’s Ring doorbell video scream, “Stop!” as a silver car plows through a family of geese killing three goslings in Peabody on Tuesday morning.

“I do not think it was an accident one bit. Yeah, I ran out to the street and I ran after him,” said Gemma.

He says he had just gotten home when he saw the incident unfold.

“I was busy getting my dog in the garage and I turned around just in time to see this guy fly by and go right through them – no hesitation,” he said.

The family of geese nested in the pond along Winona Street and cross to feast on the grass of nearby lawns. Neighbors say they were almost like pets.

“It was like a ritual. You’d wake up in the morning and they’d be out there in the backyard,” said Brian Muse. He says his daughter shot this video of the geese on her cell phone and even named them.

“Yeah she’s pretty distraught,” said Muse.

Neighbors buried the geese along the pond where they lived. Gemma says one gosling survived and swam away. He believes the driver must have known he hit them.

“Yeah, there’s no way he could not have. The sound is unbearable. There’s no way this person should be able to get away with this,” said Gemma.

Neighbors tell Boston 25 they hope the police can ID the driver and that the person will face charges or at least fines. They are also asking the town to put in rumble strips and signs to slow traffic on this busy street.
