A debut novel about an Ogden quilting group that welcomes two gay men ahead of its biggest competition of the year has climbed to No. 5 on the New York Times paperback bestseller list, turning a Salt Lake City lawyer and humor columnist into the unlikely face of a publishing surprise. Eli McCann, 42, wrote “Stitched” after spending years watching his mother’s quilting circle from the sidelines, and the book has now sold nearly 38,000 print copies and gone through three printings.

Salt Lake City’s Craft Club met at Salt & Honey on 9th and 9th, last Sunday, Oct. 25, to celebrate the release of Martina Calvi’s newest book, “The Art of Snail Mail.”. The club is a place for creative individuals to gather and make friends. Operated by Janelle Widtseldt, the club hosts activities 1-2 times a month for creatives that crave connection. “The best part [of Craft Club] are the girls who come,” Widtseldt said. “Like, it’s so cool, and I’ve met so many of my closest friends now through it. Producer Steve Boulay has booked shows in Utah for 40 years, and he’s never seen this much action on new music venues. A 6,000-seat venue is in the works for downtown Salt Lake’s overhauled sports and entertainment district, and a smaller one is planned for The Point in Draper — or maybe it’s a music festival, too. Boulay also suspects Deer Valley’s amphitheater could get an upgrade. Plus, there’s the contested project in Provo Canyon. The Vesper Amphitheater was announced with room for 20,000 — that’s bigger than the upgraded Delta Center.
