Delta launches Salt Lake City-Flagstaff nonstop in June 2027
<div class="key-facts"><h2>What travelers need to know</h2><ul> <li><strong>What happened:</strong> Delta is adding new nonstop service between Salt Lake City (SLC) and Flagstaff, Arizona (FLG), operating twice daily year-round.</li> <li><strong>Who's affected:</strong> Salt Lake City travelers headed to northern Arizona, and Flagstaff-area residents flying north; flights will be operated by Delta Connection carrier SkyWest Airlines using CRJ-550 regional jets.</li> <li><strong>Where:</strong> Salt Lake City International Airport to Flagstaff Pulliam Airport, a gateway to Sedona (about 50 minutes by car) and the Grand Canyon's South Rim (about 90 minutes by car).</li> <li><strong>When:</strong> Service begins <time datetime="2027-06-07">June 7, 2027</time>.</li> <li><strong>What to do:</strong> Travelers can watch for ticket availability ahead of the launch date as Delta builds out its Salt Lake City schedule.</li> </ul></div> <p>Delta is adding a new nonstop route connecting Salt Lake City to Flagstaff, Arizona, giving Utah travelers a direct line into one of the Southwest's busiest outdoor-recreation corridors. The airline said the twice-daily, year-round service starts <time datetime="2027-06-07">June 7, 2027</time>, and will be flown by regional partner SkyWest Airlines on CRJ-550 aircraft configured with what Delta describes as an elevated regional cabin experience.</p> <p>Flagstaff sits at high elevation in Arizona's pine country and functions as a jumping-off point for some of the state's most-visited attractions. Delta pointed to the mountain town's own draws — a historic downtown core and dark skies prized for stargazing — alongside its proximity to destinations tourists already associate with Arizona. Sedona's red-rock formations are roughly a 50-minute drive from Flagstaff, according to Delta, while the Grand Canyon's South Rim is about 90 minutes away.</p> <h2>Salt Lake City network keeps expanding</h2> <p>The Flagstaff route is the latest in a string of additions to Delta's Salt Lake City map. The airline recently announced nonstop flights from SLC to Santa Rosa/Sonoma County, California, launching <time datetime="2026-10-06">Oct. 6</time>, and to Monterey, California, launching <time datetime="2026-12-19">Dec. 19</time>. Together the three routes point to a hub that Delta is actively growing with leisure-oriented regional service rather than just long-haul connections.</p> <table> <tr><th>Route</th><th>Launch date</th><th>Frequency</th></tr> <tr><td>Salt Lake City – Santa Rosa/Sonoma County</td><td>Oct. 6, 2026</td><td>Not specified</td></tr> <tr><td>Salt Lake City – Monterey</td><td>Dec. 19, 2026</td><td>Not specified</td></tr> <tr><td>Salt Lake City – Flagstaff</td><td>June 7, 2027</td><td>Twice daily, year-round</td></tr> </table> <p>Delta describes itself as Salt Lake City's largest global premium carrier, operating more flights out of the airport than all other airlines combined — up to 270 departures on a peak day to more than 100 destinations worldwide, including Amsterdam, London, Paris and Seoul. The hub also houses two Delta Sky Clubs, among them a roughly 34,000-square-foot lounge in Concourse B that opened in 2025. Delta calls it the second-largest club in its network, with room for 600 guests, airfield views and a bar design meant to evoke Utah's landscape.</p> <h2>A premium regional jet for a short hop</h2> <p>The choice of the CRJ-550 is notable for a route built around outdoor tourism rather than business travel. Delta markets the jet's cabin as a step up for regional flying, and pairing it with twice-daily year-round frequency suggests the airline expects steady demand from both leisure travelers chasing Sedona's red rocks and Grand Canyon visitors looking to skip a connection through Phoenix or Denver. Tickets for the June 2027 launch were not yet detailed in Delta's announcement, but the route joins a lineup of West Coast and Southwest additions the airline has rolled out from Salt Lake City over the past several months.</p>

ER doc comes to the rescue of his financially troubled peers
SALT LAKE CITY — Jim Dahle was ticked off. Not incensed, exactly, but definitely perturbed. He was doing his residency at a hospital in Tucson, fresh out of the University of Utah Medical School. His specialty was emergency room medicine. Since most of the ER work was at night, that freed him up during the days to focus on how he was going to spend the money that would come rolling in once he finished his apprenticeship and became a full-fledged doctor.

University of Utah economics merger stokes fears of impending layoffs.
The Salt Lake Tribune’s coverage of looming University of Utah layoffs is critical of the decision. And why wouldn’t they be? The announced changes could affect nearly 900 staff members. To sprinkle additional salt in the wound, the decision comes with a $10 million price tag for outside consultants. Still, the Trib listened to the U’s claim that no faculty will be impacted. That claim has already been proven false. The University of Utah Economics Department has long been an indicator species for the school’s ideological freedom. It has endured as a hotbed of heterodox leftist theory since the ‘90s but, as of this year, will be rolled into the business school’s Division of Quantitative Analysis of Markets and Organizations (QAMO)—which favors a traditionally stale “analysis plus capital plus execution” take on the subject—forcing out some truly talented economists. The layoffs will undoubtedly mask other such academic reorganizations to ensure the U stays perfectly bland in all matters.

Load growth, water challenges and lean staffs put plant chemistry in focus at POWERGEN 2027
For years, Brad Buecker watched combined cycle plants come online under a staffing philosophy that left chemistry out. “So often the mindset was, ‘Well, we need to operate these facilities lean and mean, minimal staff.’ Well, that meant no chemistry staff,” said Buecker, senior technical consultant with SAMCO Technologies. “You had operators that didn’t have any chemistry training, trying to deal with, a lot of times, rather pristine water sources.”
