The officer died of a heart attack, his family said. He lived in Belleville with his wife, Kimberly Reyes, and was the nephew of Passaic Mayor Hector Lora.

The mayor said Brian was looked after by his extended family following the May 2023 death of his father, who was the mayor's brother.

"He was like a son to all of us," the mayor said. "His entire family together, those related, those in uniform, and all of his beloved friends mourn this loss together."

On his Facebook page, Lora posted that he is heartbroken over his nephew's death. He said Brian Lora "was a beautiful young man who kept a smile on his face. He never had a negative word to say about others, he treated everyone with respect and love. He loved his wife, Kimberly Lora, with all of his heart, he loved his family, his job and serving our community. He always tried to do the right thing and never once sought to abuse relationships he had, he was a young man of great integrity and strong work ethic."
