A man suspected of stealing seven cars was shot by Benton County Sheriff's Deputies Sunday evening and is now confirmed to be dead by the Benton County Coroner's Office.
Today we talked to one of the car theft victims, who says things should have ended sooner.
Steven Brummett, says his Sunday started like any other when his wife came home to put away groceries before an appointment. He says during the stop, the keys were left in the car.
Soon, his wife noticed a person coming near the home, and acting strangely. The family says that's when they heard their 2023 Hyundai in the garage start up, and then speed off.
Brummett says his first instinct was to jump in his truck and follow, all the while using features from the vehicle's manufacturer in an attempt to stop the car.
Steven says after the car slowed down to less than ten miles an hour, he was able to stop it in the Pasco Walmart parking lot, where we're told the suspect fled before stealing yet another car from the Automotive Center.
Steven Brummett, a Victim of Auto Theft on Sunday, says. "It's very frustrating, I know I've talked to a few of the people who are affected by this, via social media. They are struggling with it. Some people feel very violated. My wife and my children feel scared and violated."
Steven tells us he and his wife grew up in the Tri-Cities before moving away for two decades. He tells us it saddens him to see the area this way.
He says he's thankful to law enforcement for their response, but tells us he's frustrated with laws that continue to tie the hands of law enforcement, and believes the situation could have been stopped a lot sooner if police were able to pursue it.
Brummett, says. "What was going through my mind, was the fact that unfortunately, officers were not allowed to pursue him due to our new law policies that our Governor has issued his new task force to issue upon our officers, who have now crippled them to help protect their citizens here. Unfortunately, it could have prevented my car from being stolen, they couldn't pursue him because he wasn't considered a violent offender."
Steven says after the incident, he's urging folks no matter how brief the stop, to never leave keys readily available for a thief.
