Not going out like a lamb this year, winter storm snarls traffic and cancels school on March 31

PARK CITY, Utah — The old March weather proverb “In like a lion, out like a lamb” sure missed the mark this year.

Winter driving conditions caused several accidents and forced I-80 Parleys Canyon to close late last night ( Currently open with several accidents slowing traffic ) and Park City School District has issued a “Snow Closure Day” for Friday March 31.

Dr. Jill Gildea, PCSD Superintendent said in a statement “Snow/Wind/Drifts in the JRES, Pinebrook and Summit Park areas along with snow plows being stuck this AM are leading to a snow day/school closure decision”

At approximately 7:00 pm March 30 PCFD responded to multiple car accidents just East of mile marker 139 I-80 East bound. This picture was one of 4 accidents. A total of 3 patients were transported to valley hospitals.

Park City Mountain ski resort is reporting 14″ of new snow and Deer Valley with 8″ in the last 24 hours. Alta and Snowbird are both reporting over 20″ of new snow. Today’s full snow report available here.

UDOT has closed both Big and Little Cottonwood Canyon for avalanche mitigation. A Natural bank sluff at Laurel Pines (MP 9.5) that requires clean up has close BCC with an anticipated opening of 9:00 a.m.for SR 190. No ETA on SR 210 LCC at this time.

The Utah Avalanche Center has issue a HIGH avalanche danger rating at the mid and upper elevations due to heavy snowfall and strong winds. Natural avalanches are likely and human-triggered avalanches are very likely. Avalanches may break down several feet deep and hundreds of feet wide
