Discover Root Glen — a hidden gem at Hamilton College
CLINTON — Root Glen, nestled on the grounds of Hamilton College in Clinton, offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Oren and Nancy Root planted the seeds that would grow into the glen in 1850 in a sheep pasture surrounding their homestead. Their son, Elihu Root, a Hamilton College graduate who served his country as Secretary of War, Secretary of State, and a U.S. Senator, as well as earning the Nobel Peace Prize, came home to Clinton to carry on the legacy, expanding the glen’s portfolio of trees. Elihu’s son, Edward, and his wife, Grace, continued the expansion, with Edward curating hybrid “true red” and “true blue” Iris. After his death, Grace would define these 7.5 acres known as the “hidden treasure of Hamilton College” by establishing the Root Glen Foundation to ensure its perpetual care, transform it into an endeavor of botanical education, and offer it to the public as “a place of beauty.”
