Like the youngest children in a family, puppies idolize their older siblings. They can teach them to be less afraid of new experiences and show them how things are done. However, they must reach a certain age before they can join in on many of these activities, which is a fact that can be hard to accept.

While these Golden Retrievers took a cool dip in the pool, this little Bernese Mountain puppy looked on in wonder. Although he may be too small to participate this summer, he’s taking notes to make a splash next year.

Watch him hanging out with the cool kids in this video shared on September 8:

Even though Zeus (@ moosiemoothebmd ) might not be ready to swim yet, he’s having a blast watching his Golden Retriever siblings play in the water. He even tries to engage them in a game with a cheerful bow as they exit the pool with their toys. Although he may not be ready for the deep end yet, watching them have a great time gives him a positive association with the water, which should help him become a willing participant soon. Especially considering Bernese Mountain Dogs don’t stay small for long.

At What Age Can Puppies Learn to Swim?

While this can depend on the breed, Heaven-Sent Golden Retrievers report the earlier they begin, the better. They reveal puppies go through different stages of fear, with the first beginning at 8 to 11 weeks of age and the next at around six months old. Therefore, they recommend introducing puppies to the water and teaching them to swim before or between these stages. First, they suggest letting them get their feet wet in a kiddy pool while receiving plenty of positive reinforcement. Once comfortable, they can be carried into deeper water while still taking it slow. Introducing puppies to new aquatic activities in a safe and controlled environment is essential, especially while still developing their strength and coordination.

People were charmed by this precious pup. Viewer @warnerbroandsis responded, “Zeusy is so adorable. He just wants to be in the middle of the action!” He does! Another viewer responded, “He is so cute! The way he fit in with his pack right away is amazing!” He’s one of the gang! Viewer @kaia.the.bernese remarked, “He’s going to be one heck of a swimmer, just like his siblings.” With teachers like this, there’s no doubt!

Having older siblings willing to show you the ropes is always good. However, there’s no need to rush being a puppy, as this stage already goes by much too quickly.
