SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – Residents of Pajaro have been allowed to return home after being evacuated nearly 2 weeks ago because of the Pajaro River levee breach.

As residents try to rebuild, the issue now is just how safe it may or may not be to return.

The town is struggling with a massive mess that the flooding left behind. There’s currently no potable water, toilets can’t be flushed and mud is everywhere.

Families were already struggling after the massive storms that hit the region beginning of January. Flooding back then led to some homes growing mold.

This led to health complications for some and even at least one hospitalization.

Now, things are even worse in terms of flood damage.

"We've submitted requests for the California Department of Toxic Substances to assist with debris removal," said Kelsey Scanlon, an emergency services planner with the Monterey County Office of Emergency Services.

"And we've requested a long-term housing task force to assist us in supporting the community members who won’t be able to move home," she said.

Officials are warning residents of the small town that if they do return home, it is at their own risk.

The Red Cross is on hand to provide information on safety, as well as how to clean up their homes correctly amidst this type of damage.
