The Owatonna boys and girls track and field teams will spend a majority of their spring touring around southern Minnesota and rack up multiple top placements as teams and as individuals. But Wednesday provided the Huskies a chance to compete in their first meet at Federated Field.

Owatonna hosted a Big 9 Conference triangular with Rochester John Marshall and Albert Lea. The boys and girls teams both took first place in their respective team standings with 104 points for the boys and 108 points for the girls.

One of the biggest highlights of the day came with the boys 4x200 relay team consisting of Garrett Karsten, Nolan Ginskey, Luke Webber and Keanan Larson.

Not only did the relay team set a brand new school record in the event, but they ended up recording the eighth fastest 4x200 time ever in Minnesota. They officially clocked in at 1:27.29, which would’ve beaten out Eagan (1:27.71), Waseca (1:27.39) and Chatfield’s (1:29.92) state title-winning times across all three classes at last year’s MSHSL state track meet.

The girls team also took first in their respective 4x200 relay with Maya Badger, Laken Meier, Halle Theis and Jozie Johnson recording their season best time of 1:49.65.

Owatonna didn’t just earn top times in the 4x200 relay. Out of the 18 total events between track and field, the boys team recorded 13 first place finishes and the girls recorded 15 first place finishes. The Huskies took 28 first place finishes out of 36 possible.

Field events were dominated by the Huskies with the girls earning top placements in every event, while the boys only missed out on long jump to sweep first in all events.

Kyleah Miller and Nyalual Chan led girls throwers with Miller taking first in shot put at 37 feet, one inch and Chan taking first in discus at 106 feet, 10 inches. Zach Dahnert and Torrin Smith led the boys with Dahnert throwing for 46 feet, 10.5 inches for first in shot put and Smith throwing for 136 feet, five inches for first in the discus throw.

The girls swept first place the high, triple and long jumps behind Jaiden Williams clearing a personal best four feet, 10 inches in the high jump, Johanna Spielman reaching a personal best 32 feet, 10.5 inches in the triple jump and Halle Theis recording her season best 16 feet, seven inches in the long jump.

On the boys side, Terell Miller cleared a personal best five feet, 10 inches for first in the boys high jump and Nolan Ginskey reached 41 feet, 10 inches for first in the triple jump. Ginskey (20-03.25) fell just 0.75 inches off RJM’s Savy Vath (20-04) in the long jump.

Girls pole vault recorded the top five placements with senior Emma Johnson clearing a season best nine feet, six inches for first place. Boys were led by juniors Spencer Copeland and Connor Borwege with Copeland clearing 12 feet, six inches for first and Borwege clearing 12 feet for third.

In track events, the boys and girls teams both recorded the top times in the 100m, 200m, 400m, the 4x800 relay and all four hurdle events.

Keanan Larson led the pack with a personal record of 11.20 seconds for first in the 100m, while Webber, Karsten and Vicente Chavez closely followed for second, third and fourth. Jozie Johnson led the girls 100m at 13.02 seconds with Sydney Willaert in third.

Theis led the girls 200m pack with a time of 27.54 seconds for first with Laken Meier, Kendra Muller and Addi Langlois following in second, third and fourth. Karsten led the boys 200m with a time of 23.15 for first.

Maryn Pool led the girls 400m at 1:06.70 for first with Kelsey Skala, Kate Cowell and Anna Hilgendorf rounding out the top four. Nolan Ginskey took first in the boys 400m at 51.73 seconds with his brother, Jacob Ginskey, right behind him in second place.

Seth Johnson took first in the boys 110 and 300 hurdles with times of 15.01 seconds and 40.12 seconds respectively while Darian Stransky followed in second during both events. Maya Badger took first in the 100 hurdles at 17.22 seconds and Carsyn Brady took first in the 300 hurdles at 47.97 seconds.

Owatonna also swept first in the 4x800 relays with the boys team of Michael Halverson, Colin Zimmerman, Kaiden Struss and Jack Sorenson clocking in at 8:52.78 and the girls team of Leah Leckner, Ava Cox, Harmony Piepho and Kendra Melby clocking in at 10:27.41.

The girls 4x400 team of Halle Theis, Naomoe Delarosa, Audrey Dowling and Carsyn Brady also recorded the top time of 4:12.80. Individually, Clara Sennott recorded her personal record of 12:33.85 for first in the girls 3,200m and Dawson Levy represented the boys with his personal record of 4:39.64 for first in the 1,600m.
