Going into a Tuesday night matchup at Federated Park, the Owatonna Huskies and the Faribault Falcons were both looking to enter back into the win column, coming off losses in their prior games.

Thanks to a strong performance in the circle from junior Lilly Trager and in the batter’s box all around, the Huskies came out on top with a 10-1 victory to improve to 5-3 on the season, while the Falcons dropped to 1-5 on their season.

The Huskies got ahead in the bottom of the first inning and made use of the setting sun behind the field. With sophomore Kendra Bogen already on base, senior third baseman Zoie Roush drove the ball to right field and got it to fall with the ball hiding in the sunlight as Roush touched all the bases standing up for the early 2-0 lead.

Faribault junior Jamie Adamek helped the Falcons respond in the top of the second inning with a hard liner into the left-center gap for a double. She slid into third on a ground out and scored Faribault’s lone run of the game when the throw to third went out of play.

Roush came through again for the Huskies in the bottom of the inning. An RBI single from Izzy Radel extended the Owatonna lead to 3-1 before Roush delivered a two out, two RBI single to extend it to 5-1.

Owatonna continued to bring in more runners in with additional two runs coming in during the third and fourth innings. Keeli Doran scored off an error at third base and Mehsa Krause scored on a wild pitch during the third, while Sam Bogen and Taya Selbrade recorded RBI singles in the fourth.

The Huskies brought in their last run of the night during the bottom of the sixth thanks to an RBI single from Krause to extend their lead up to 10-1.

Faribault had a tough time hitting against Trager, who has proved to be another strong option in the circle for the Huskies behind usual ace Kennedy Hodgman. The Owatonna junior tallied seven strikeouts while only allowing two hits, two walks and one unearned run.

“We got a strong performance from Lilly Trager in the circle,” said Owatonna head coach Jeremy Moran. “That, combined with some timely hitting and aggressive base running, we were able to put a lot of pressure on the Falcons defense and come out on top tonight.”

On the Falcons end, senior Rylee Sietsema matched Trager with seven strikeouts in her seven innings in the circle. But facing a well-experienced, senior-dominated Huskies lineup, Sietsema couldn’t limit Owatonna’s offense while having to overcome five errors as a team. The Huskies recorded their 10 runs off 12 hits.

Doran, Krause, Zoie Roush and Sam Bogen all recorded two hits each. Radel, Hodgman, Trager and Averie Roush recorded one hit each. Zoie Roush led the team with four RBIs. Radel, Krause, Sam Bogen and Taya Selbrade had an RBI each.

Adamek and senior center fielder Reagan Drengenberg recorded the Falcons only two hits. Drengenberg and freshman first baseman Amira Williams both drew walks.

Owatonna’s win helped it bounce back following a tough loss to Class AAA No. 3 ranked Mankato East and will add some confidence as the Huskies are set to host Class AAA No. 2 ranked Winona on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Falcons faced the loss after not playing for nearly a week due to game postponements. They’ll look for win No. 2 on the season when it travels to Red Wing on Thursday. Faribault defeated the Wingers 5-4 at home earlier in the season.
