Week 2 predictions for high school football on Emerald Coast
Last week's predictions column was a mess. I had faith in the area teams that lost and underestimated the area teams that flexed on my way to a sad 4-6 week. For perspective, not once last year did I have a sub-.500 week. But variance happens, injuries happen, transfers happen. At least this week we're not flying in blind on what to expect. With that said, let's get to the picks and hopefully do better than last week. Week 1 HS football scores: FWB football lone Okaloosa team to begin 1-0; SoWal and Walton win Week 2 Predictions Freeport 49, North Bay Haven 7 Reasoning: The Bulldogs (0-1) won this match 54-13 last year, and they got better in the offseason. Don't overthink this one. Walton 35, Arnold 21 Reasoning: The Braves (1-0) are in the midst of a three-game homestand and coming off an impressive 52-7 win over West Florida, who beat Jay Lindsey's crew 35-6 last year. They've very clearly earned our trust, although Arnold (1-0) is coming off a 27-21 win over Freeport. Niceville 49, West Florida 0 Reasoning: After being held to seven points in the opener against a stacked Prattville team, expect the Eagles (0-1)

Choctaw football blanked in 2nd half, drops season opener at Mosley
PANAMA CITY — Mosley is incredibly tough to beat at Tommy Oliver Stadium. This is a three-time defending champion, after all, a thorn in Niceville's side. So from a glass-half-full perspective, the Big Green's non-district, 15-13 loss in Thursday's season opener isn't on its own merits overly concerning. But that doesn't make the way they lost, most self-inflicted errors, any easier to digest. Choctaw committed 23-or-so penalties, had two turnovers deep in Dolphins territory, had a key receiver ejected for two unsportsmanlike flags and, cramping the entire night, emerged with several key players banged up or injured and didn't even approach a scoring drive in a scoreless second half. The only offense the Big Green could muster was a Carter Marracco 1-yard keeper in the first quarter and a 37-yard touchdown connection between IMG transfer Baker Giles and Rives Brown, the latter who was tossed after spiking the ball in the end zone. The subsequent two-point conversion fell just shy, and with it Choctaw's only legitimate chance to knot the score at 15. Even with all the self-inflicted wounds, Choctaw still had a chance to make it a successful night. Bold Predictions: 26 bold predictions in 2026 for high school
