SCHOOL IN OVERLAND PARK. INVESTIGATORS ARE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT CAUSED THIS LARGE, LARGE FIRE AT AN APARTMENT COMPLEX. SEVEN CARS ARE DESTROYED, 13 OTHERS ARE DAMAGED. THIS FIRE HAPPENED AT A CLUB AT INDIAN CREEK APARTMENT COMPLEX IN OVERLAND PARK. THAT’S JUST NORTHWEST OF I-435. AND METCALF CAME TOWARDS ANDY ALCOCK LIVE AFTER TALKING TO SOME OF THE CAR OWNERS AND INVESTIGATORS. AND YOU NOW HAVE A BETTER LOOK AT THE DAMAGE HERE RIGHT, MATT AND LAURA, WE CAN TELL YOU, FORTUNATELY, THERE WERE NO INJURIES OR DEATHS, BUT THERE WAS PLENTY OF PROPERTY DAMAGE. TAKE A LOOK BEHIND ME. YOU CAN SEE THE BURNED OUT WRECKS HERE IN THIS BADLY DAMAGED, FENCED IN CARPORT. THE FIRE LEFT ONE MAN. WE TALKED TO WITHOUT TRANSPORTATION. FIRE RIPPED THROUGH THIS CARPORT AROUND ONE MONDAY MORNING. A NEIGHBOR WOKE UP LOCAL RESTAURANT WORKER ADRIAN CAPITO. WHEN HE CAME OUTSIDE, HE SAW HIS COUSIN’S CAR ON FIRE AND THEN WENT BACK INSIDE TO GET HIS KEYS TO TRY TO SAVE HIS JEEP PARKED NEARBY. BUT WHEN HE CAME BACK OUTSIDE, IT WAS TOO LATE. I KNOW THE BAD SITUATION BECAUSE I KNOW HOW IT TOOK HER TO MOVE TO MY WORK. I SAW THE LIGHTS ON ALL OVER, BUT I DIDN’T HEAR ANYTHING. THAT’S WHAT’S SO SURPRISING TO ME. OVERLAND PARK AND LEAWOOD FIREFIGHTERS WERE ABLE TO CONTAIN THE FIRE WITHIN 15 MINUTES, SO IT WOULDN’T SPREAD. NOW THEY’RE INTERVIEWING VEHICLE OWNERS TO TRY TO FIGURE OUT WHAT HAPPENED. AT THIS POINT, THERE’S NOTHING THAT INDICATES ANY ANY CAUSE FOR SUSPICION OR ANYTHING FOUL PLAY. CAPITO IS CONTACTED HIS INSURANCE COMPANY AND WAS TOLD IT WILL TAKE A DAY OR TWO TO SORT OUT HIS SITUATION. HE STILL OWED MONEY ON HIS JEEP AND USED TO REALLY TRY WORKING HARD TO TO FINISH TO PAY FOR A AND NOW HE’S GONE. NOW THE DAMAGE VEHICLES WERE LARGELY PARKED HERE JUST NORTH OF THE CARPORT. YOU CAN SEE WHERE THE HEAT ACTUALLY MELTED AWAY, THE FENDER OF THE PLASTIC POLYMER, EXCEPT USING THE WINDSHIELD WIPER FLUID BASIN. AND RIGHT NEXT TO THAT BASIN. YOU’VE GOT THE LICENSE PLATE THAT IS JUST DECORATIVE, BUT IT’S MADE OF METAL. NO DAMAGE. REPORTING LIVE IN OVERLAND PARK, ANDY ALCOCK KMBC9 NEWS. AND WE ALSO REACHED OUT TO A REPRESENTATIVE OF THE APARTMENT

Local restaurant worker Adrian Copto was awakened by a neighbor before 1 a.m.

When he came outside, Copto saw his cousin’s car on fire.

He rushed back inside to get his keys to try to save his Jeep parked nearby.

But by the time he came back outside, it was too late.

“I’m in a bad situation because I don’t have my car to go to work,” Copto said.

Apartment complex resident Laurabeth Efron said she wasn’t awakened by any noise but did see the lights from police and fire department vehicles outside.

“I came out and expected to see one little car with electrical problems and I saw this whole bunch of cars, just shocking,” she said.

Overland Park and Leawood firefighters were able to contain the flames within 15 minutes.

The fire was contained to the carport area and never threatened nearby apartment buildings where people live.

No one was injured and no one was inside any of the burning vehicles.

Most of the damaged vehicles were parked in a line north of the carport.

The back and front fenders of some cars were melted from the fire’s heat as were head and tail light coverings.

Investigators from the Overland Park Fire Department were trying to interview as many vehicle owners as possible to help determine how the fire started.

“At this point, there’s nothing that indicates any cause for suspicion or anything, foul play,” said Jason Rhodes, Overland Park Fire Department Spokesman.

Copto contacted his insurance company on Monday.

He said he was told a representative would get back to him in the next day or two.

Copto said he still owes money on his Jeep.

“Ya that’s terrible. Ya because we’ve been working hard to have the car and now, I don’t have any cars,” he said.

The apartment complex manager referred KMBC 9 News to a company spokesman in Des Moines for comment.
