So we just fight for it every day.”

2023-24 City League boys basketball preview: Newcomer Lima Senior favored to win title
Since he began as Lima Senior’s head coach in 2014-15, Quincey Simpson’s Spartans have been northwest Ohio's top boys basketball program. Over that nine-season span, Simpson’s Spartans have posted a 185-49 overall record, reached six Division I regional finals in an eight-year span (2015 to 2022), and won or shared four straight titles in the former Three Rivers Athletic Conference (2019 to ‘22). To get to that level, Lima Senior first had to overcome the previous dominance in the TRAC and northwest Ohio of St. John’s Jesuit, doing so in the area’s undisputed top boys basketball conference, and one of the state’s most competitive circuits. Although their run of league titles was snapped in the final year of the now-defunct TRAC last year, with Central Catholic and Whitmer sharing that crown, the Spartans enter their new home in Toledo’s City League in a familiar spot — as title favorites.

2023-24 NWOAL boys basketball preview: Patrick Henry enters season as favorite
After learning his Patriots were favored to win the Northwest Ohio Athletic League boys basketball title this season, you could say Patrick Henry coach Bryan Hieber was respectfully gracious, but also understandably puzzled. Nonetheless, the Patriots received seven of the eight first-place votes and 61 of a possible 64 voting points in a preseason poll of league coaches to earn the “team to beat” label entering the 2023-24 campaign. Archbold, which got the other first-place nod, was second in the poll with 57 points, and defending champion Wauseon tied Evergreen for third at 41. “I certainly appreciate the preseason recognition,” Hieber said, “but honestly, I'm a bit shocked. We lost a lot of key pieces from our team last year, and there are a few teams in the league this year that return all five starters – Archbold and Evergreen.”
