County commissioners select contractor for new animal shelter in Waldport, construction could start in July
Lincoln County hopes to hold a groundbreaking ceremony in late June for its new animal control shelter in Waldport and have a Salem-based contractor moving dirt by mid-July. If all goes well – not a given in any coastal construction project – the $5 million shelter in the Waldport Industrial Park could be open and operating sometime next summer.
Nighttime light show
People across the country and around the world had an opportunity to enjoy a spectacular show in the night sky last weekend due to a solar storm that pushed the Northern Lights much farther south than normal. There were even clear skies on the coast Friday night, allowing area residents and visitors an opportunity to enjoy views like this one over the Yaquina Bay Bridge in Newport, as seen from the south jetty. Until highways reached the coast, rail passengers used Yaquina River ferries to reach Newport
Before highways reached the Oregon coast, ferries worked the rivers connecting inland rail stations to cities at the beach. The railroad from the Willamette Valley to the central Oregon coast ended in Yaquina City, four miles east of Newport, so rail passengers took the river ferry “Newport” the rest of the way. The ferry averaged 50,000 passengers a year, according to the Newport Journal newspaper.
Take a rhod trip to the wetlands
Layers of wood chips and mulch soften the steps along the half dozen connecting trails that crisscross the Cutler City Wetlands Open Space, pathways lined with deep green thickets of salal, elderberry and evergreen huckleberry. The trails wind and loop through a terrain that is remarkably diverse for an area only slightly more than 26 acres. At the eastern end and in the center, are the swampy ponds or skunk-weed marshes that give the open space its name. There are also a few majestic old-growth Sitkas, thick stands of alders and shore pines, their trunks cloaked in the pale green feathers of Oregon beaked moss.
You are going to lava this
You could almost say she was dancing before she learned to walk. “When she was a baby she would wiggle around on her bum swinging her arms,” said Chris Wolf, mother of future dancer Hoku LaSoya. “It was really cute.”. Hoku began taking ballet lessons at the age...
I support OCCC’s plan for trades education center
As a longstanding resident of Lincoln County who is deeply invested in our community's welfare and education, I urge your support for Bond Measure 21-224 supporting OCCC’s plan to build a new trades education center. Maintaining a residence in our area poses unique challenges. We frequently rely on skilled professionals such as electricians, plumbers, well-pump maintenance experts, appliance repair technicians, and small engine mechanics (for chainsaws, etc.). They often can’t get to you for weeks because they don’t have enough qualified staff. In my conversations...

Warm Springs asks state to repeal agreement with Grand Ronde
Nine months after Oregon passed a historic agreement with the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs filed a petition to repeal the agreement, saying the state didn’t consult them about an agreement that threatens their treaty rights.
Want your May primary ballot to count? Make sure you meet 8 p.m. Tuesday deadline
OK, now you have a deadline if you want to have your May primary election ballot counted. Ballots need to reach the Lincoln County clerk’s office by 8 p.m. Tuesday. To ensure they get counted, it’s probably best to drop them off at secure drop boxes at all city halls in the county or the county courthouse in Newport rather than put them in the mail — although a Tuesday postmark still means they still will be counted, but just later in the week.

Headed to Hayward
Newport Newport’s Finn Collson is one, if not the best, distance runner for the 4A division in the state of Oregon.
