ORLANDO, Fla. — An arrest was made in a 2022 hookah bar shooting that left six people injured, Orange County Sheriff John Mina announced on Tuesday.
Deputies arrested Cristian Burgos, 25, for the drive-by shooting at Toxic Lounge in October of last year.
"This type of violence has had people concerned in our community and frankly, it concerns me as well," Mina said.
Mina and Det. Robert Gautam say the violence all started when a rapper was set to perform at Toxic nightclub last October.
Investigators believe 25-year-old Burgos was connected to another club.
"We learned that Burgos was connected to a rival nightclub that was outfitted by the Toxic Lounge for this to host a rapper," Gautam said.
Investigators say the Euphoria Hookah Lounge just a few miles away was going to have an after party.
Detectives say Burgos drove by and shot into both venues.
"So six people were struck by gunfire at the Toxic nightclub. And apparently, you know, there were a lot more people there, so we could have had multiple killings at that Toxic Lounge," Mina said.
One woman was shot in the head, but survived.
Fortunately, no one was seriously hurt at the hookah lounge, and no one died.
But investigators say because no one got a good look at the car Burgos was driving, it wasn't until January that they started to piece it all together.
That's when Burgos was arrested for his alleged involvement in a carjacking.
They found an AR-15-style rifle that they connected to both of the lounge shootings.
"Convicted felons obviously aren't buying their firearms legally. Most of them, again, get them through, just stealing them whether that's in houses but mostly unlocked vehicles," Mina said.
Mina says he knows nightlife safety is a top priority for the community.
He says his deputies target venues that don't appear to have proper licensing to prevent those kinds of things from happening.
"We send in plain clothes detectives to buy alcohol. We're constantly doing surveillance for unmarked vehicles in those areas where we know we've had issues before," Mina said.
The sheriff said Burgos had a long criminal history that includes a murder charge that came out of an attempted robbery in Kissimmee.
Burgos is now facing six counts of attempted murder and a charge for shooting into a building.
