Often when people see a nearly half-ton ancient reptile with razor-sharp teeth, they fear for their lives, a reaction that only seems natural. But Wild Florida is dedicated to clearing up misconceptions about Florida’s “most recognizable, yet misunderstood” animal.

The Central Florida attraction, which is set on Cypress Lake about 30 minutes south of Kissimmee, welcomes visitors for Gator Week, offering almost-free admission to its Gator Park through June 3. Guests who make a small cash donation to the Wild Florida Scholarship Fund, which benefits Osceola County high school seniors entering college, can experience all the park’s gator area has to offer.

“Gator Week is dedicated to educating guests about alligators, debunking common myths and developing a more positive reputation for these reptiles,” said Sam Haught, Wild Florida’s co-owner, in an email. “Last year we were able to raise $6,000 that all went to local high school graduates starting their college career.”

In addition to the admission benefit, Wild Florida visitors can experience a daily gator call competition, a feeding frenzy, Plinko games (for an extra $5 donation) and a Crusher show featuring the park’s 13-foot, 1,000-pound resident gator. Other special activities include a gator jumpathon contest and a gator slushie drinking contest.

Wild Florida also features airboat tours, a drive-thru safari, animal encounters, adventure packages and the Chomp House Grill.
