Students build unique machines at upcoming Orlando Science Center competition

ORLANDO, Fla. — Forty-nine students across five counties will test their skills in an engineering competition at the Orlando Science Center this weekend.

Sixteen teams will compete in the Curtis Kinetic Science Competition on Saturday.

Objects that are used in the sculpture must be donated, discovered or purchased for less than $100.

The annual tournament focuses on a middle school student’s ability to transform everyday objects into kinetic systems modeled after Rube Goldberg’s machines.

Students will build innovative designs using the Florida Sunshine State Standards for Science, moving parts, and energy sources.

Guests can view the projects from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and students will demonstrate their projects from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., with winners announced at the end.

Best in fair winners receive and category award winners receive $250. Teachers also receive a cash prize.
