WOMEN’S 50 BACKSTROKE

Podium:

  1. Levenia Sim (TNT) – 23.75 (meet record)
  2. Maggie Wanezek (EBSC) – 24.04
  3. Emma Kern (AQJT) – 24.51

TNT Swimming 16-year-old Levenia Sim had a massive performance in the women’s 50 backstroke last night at the 2023 NCSA Spring Championships. Sim swam a 23.75, breaking her own NCSA Spring Champs meet record of 23.95, which she set last year as a 15-year-old.

On top of the personal best time, Sim also became the fastest 16-and-under girl in the SCY 50 back ever. While we can’t officially call it a National Age Group Record (NAG) because USA Swimming doesn’t keep official NAG Records for the stroke 50s (fly, back, breast) past the 11-12 age group, Sim is now the de facto NAG holder in the 15-16 girls 50 back.

The previous fastest 16-and-under in the event was Carmel Swim Club’s Berit Berglund, who swam a 23.89 leading off Carmel High School’s 200 medley relay at the 2022 IN High School State Championships. Sim’s 23.95 from last year’s NCSAs actually stood, and still stands, as the fastest 50 back by a 15-year-old girl all-time.

Sim had a terrific meet in Orlanda this past week, clocking personal bests in four events, including the 50 back. In addition to the 50 back, Sim swam a new lifetime best in the 50 fly (23.56), 100 fly (51.69), and 200 IM (1:58.45).

Sim, currently a junior in high school, has not yet committed to a college for the fall of 2024. Of note, Sim’s older sister, Letitia Sim, just concluded her sophomore season at the University of Michigan this weekend.
